Default One third of British Expats return to the UK earlier than they planned

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/expat/exp...ming-back.html

The Telegraph has a survey today about returning expats who came back to the UK earlier than they planned.
The top five explanations given by those polled - who were allowed to choose multiple reasons - were financial difficulties (62 per cent) homesickness (47 per cent), cultural differences (44 per cent), visa expiration (39 per cent) and lack of social interaction (27 per cent).

When I left the UK in 82, to work in Canada, of the 12 engineers hired along with me, 6 went back to the UK before the end of 12 months.

Most of them returned to the UK because their families were homesick.

I have now been in the US 30 years and have only been back to the UK briefly, 4 times.

I am now a US citizen with an American wife.

My perception of moving to the States is you either love it or hate it - not much in the middle.

My wife and I returned to the UK (from Canada) for a couple of years for family reasons. I thought we would stay in the UK but ended up emigrating to the US. I'm "in the middle" as you put it regarding the US. Don't love it, but don't hate. I like some things and dislike others (particularly the gun culture and the health insurance system).

I would like a US Healthcare system, but not like the NHS.

I do like you can defend yourself.

Although if you get shot, you could go bankrupt...assuming you don't die first. And if you defend yourself, you could get arrested and/or sued.

I would rather not get shot, or knifed.

There is of course always the prospect of the latter. A friend of mine was told to bury the body and avoid the hassle by the local Sheriff.

Well I'm one of those people who intended to go home after 1 or 2 years...but somehow I got stuck here. I am another in the middle...some things I like...somethings I don't.

I also stayed longer than my 3 year Posrt Doc. I've been in the US for 25 years, but there are places in the US that I could not live and I'm now cynical enough to feel that they'll always be good and bad in every place. I could easily live in the UK again, but I'd get annoyed at all the small minded xenophobia and censorship that i see in the UK right now, but then again I hate the US gun culture and the Ayn Rand mentality that is becoming the norm.

So, presumably, two thirds stayed for as long as, or longer, than they planned ...

Telegraph reader comment:

I only wish those who come to the UK, not finding themselves at ease with OUR culture, would likewise do a U-turn - even sponsored !

We came 'forever' but want to go back.

I wish Telegraph readers would stop confirming the stereotype I have of them, it's very depressing.

I prefer the Guardian on line, but the Telegraph in print.

Comments on line seems similar.

I'm a returning expat. i don't hate it here but the older I get, the more homesick I get and the harder it is to leave every time I go for a visit.
