There are hundreds, if not thousands of people living in Australia who feel the same way as you Tass! It's takes a big person to admit that the 'dream' is not all it's cracked up to be. It's also extremely difficult when you have a partner that doesn't support your desire to return home.

I didn't like Oz the moment I stepped off the plane and I still don't, never will. I have tried to convince myself that Oz is a great place but as hard as I try I don't think I will ever feel at home here. Which is not to say Australia is neccesarily a bad place, just not for me. My husband and I will be returning to Europe (not sure when or where) at some point but I really feel your pain! I have been here for 3 years but it feels like a million.

I hope you can come to some sort of compromise with your husband about what you're going to do soon!

its so good you are returning home as a couple :) as someone who came back alone. OH came back 6weeks after me. coming back alone was bloody hard and not being sure if they would come back too....its all so difficult for all you posters here, because if both people dont feel the same about a place, one is going to be miserable. Timing, i think is crucial. i returned to the uk probably sooner than id of liked because i hope one day i wont regret not getting citizensip...However, i felt that the longer i left it the harder it would be to go back to the "old england" i missed and it was pretty easy to pick up again. but if id of stayed 3 yrs, i would have felt deskilled in my profession and probably had reverse culture shock back here!
when OH clearly feels hed still liked to of stayed in Oz, when the weathers bad, when we argue re not seeing things through etc etc, you WILL feel guilty that alls not right for the one compelled to go back. its a difficult one to live with. Bear it in mind. I would say, go home sooner rather than later means your old life wont be so alien to you when you return...but that citizenship paper...Not getting that may come back to haunt you....but stay too long and you'll perhaps assimilate into something you dont want to be...A tough one :rolleyes: good luck all of you
having said that, from my point of view...a thing i found really hard in Oz was this really strange type of boredom, not from being bored but because everything seemed liked a perfect showhouse if that makes sense, so i dwelled a lot there. here, im too full in my life to be bored/dwell and that really helps. perhaps if i couldve shaken that surreal feeling off in Oz, id of been ok, but i couldnt...and although OH didnt want to come back, now he is the good thing is that here there are so many more distractions to keep the blues away. hes coping better here than i did there!
all of you, trust your instincts and try to sort out the timings with any plans you make
(i need some of you to come back for a UK meet-up because no-one, unless theyve travelled themselves will think any of your reasons/complaints that big enough reason to return :rolleyes: Thats what makes this forum good

Thanks, Chance to be, so happy that things are working out for you back home.Understand what you mean about boredom, we are just going through the motions until the house sells.I wish we could have returned earlier, I feel the last 4 years have been,for me, a waste of life but at least we 're going back now and need to look to the future.Good luck to you !

Wombatboy, we're 34 k's west of Brisbane, moved here because my mother in law moved here, thought it would help having family nearby.

Yeah you not wrong there. I've been living in Adelaide for 13 months, now thats boredom for you! (I feel like i've died inside :eek: )

Brisbane is great, one thing I enjoyed was hanging around Brisbane.

Well it's horses for courses but the best way I can sum up Brisbane is we went to a farewell party in a pub there 4 weeks ago. Saturday night, 7. 30 pm, we had to drive around for a while to find the venue and we both looked at each other and said "where is everyone?" When we left around 11.15, just the same,the roads were almost empty.

I just wanted to say that we are going back to the UK next year, and I understand exactly where you are all coming from.
Chance to be - My DH also really likes it here, but I am so unhappy. I don't feel like the children are doing as well at school etc. I haven't got any real friends... The list is endless, but DH agrees that although he doesn't really want to go home, he won't be as miserable there as I am here.
I think it is all about the level of compromise to be made, and him going home to his old job, and old friends, family etc is far less of a compromise than me sitting crying, and fretting about the childrens education, money etc etc
When we looked at it like that there was no big decisions to make.

My mother in law moved next door so I went to the other side of the world so she couldn't do it again :D
