Nice places to live in the U.K.?
Hi,
I'm currently 18 but I was born and raised in Leeds until I was 8, and then I moved to Australia. I really would like to move back after I finish university but I know that I don't want to move back to Leeds. I was thinking of Southampton, Oxford, Brighton, Derby or Bristol. Can anyone tell me which place is nicest and would be best for a young person? |
Re: Nice places to live in the U.K.?
Bristol is nice as is Oxford (albeit relatively expensive). I don't know enough about Brighton, Southampton or Derby to comment but I would add Sheffield to that list and would suggest it should be in your top three to consider particularly if you're from Yorkshire.

As a British passport is valid for 10 years, I see no harm for the OP applying for one just now when the current exchange rate is favorable. You can apply for your British passport using the link below - https://www.gov.uk/overseas-passports Once the OP returns to the UK, he/she will need to apply for a National Insurance Number ASAP - https://www.gov.uk/apply-national-insurance-number |

Find a job first - then worry about where you are going to live. You are doing things the other way round !

Whats the reason you think your life will be better in UK than Australia. You will be leaving behinds friends, relatives and a country that you have grown up in.
You may have various types of problems in Australia, but the UK has its own problems. For young people in the Antipodes , it is very common to look to a few years and more in the NH. All the best ElleB. You are only young once. |
Re: Nice places to live in the U.K.?
I agree about Brighton, took my husband to visit it the last time we went back to UK and he loved it. I miss Sussex more than I ever thought I would....
Can't comment on the other places, except Oxford is lovely but expensive and Southampton is a working port, so always seems very industrial to me. Although there are lovely places near by, such as Hamble, Winchester and the New Forest - all very expensive! |

Re: Nice places to live in the U.K.?
Bristol area is nice? Outside of Bristol the countryside can be lovely but then you've probably got a nasty commute and a bit quiet for young person too.
Biased of course, I'm from the other side of the Severn Bridge! Oxford or Brighton would be my choices. Get a well paying job though! Good luck xx |
Re: Nice places to live in the U.K.?
You have to go where the work is.

Looking at indeed.co.uk, there seem to be plenty of sonographer jobs all over the country so I think she will have a choice of where to go. They also seem to be "tier 2" so from the very little I know, if the OP is not British they will still consider her application and be able to get a visa. Not a bad job option actually. |

Re: Nice places to live in the U.K.?
I'd be interested in how the OP compiled her list.
My choice, for what it is worth since I'm half a century older than the OP, would be Brighton, Bristol, Oxford, Derby, Southampton, in order of preference. But Southampton is only last because I don't know the town at all. |

Re: Nice places to live in the U.K.?
Bournemouth has shaken off its "retirement home" image and has become a mecca for young people - or so I am told!
|
Re: Nice places to live in the U.K.?
I think Bournemouth is still expensive though, don't football managers live there?

FWIW I wouldn't consider Southampton to be "nice". In terms of a vibrant city with culture, I would consider Liverpool to be "nice", and definitely consider it ahead of Derby and Southampton. |

Anyway my two penn'oth would be that it must slightly depend on where they are coming from. If you're coming from small town Aus then maybe country town/city would be preferable, if you're coming from Sydney CBD then Oxford (for example) may seem too small town? No idea. All Uni towns have a thriving nightlife for the under 30s. Is being close to water preferable to being in Derby etc etc etc. Agree with everyone though, get a job offer and look at the town. Don't set your heart on Bristol and then only find work in Accrington. That would just be depressing. |

Norwich, Worcester, Parts of Suffolk....parts of Edinburgh...Glasgow south side and West end

Re: Nice places to live in the U.K.?
Depends on what activities you like doing. I you like sailing Southampton or Brighton. Are you looking at living in the cities or in the surrounding area? I like Hampshire as a county. Do you want easy access to airports or channel rail?
I would probably make a check list of your desire and then choose a place that fits. My experience of Sheffield is a smell near the M1, bendy buses and a guy being taken down outside a supermarket and his jacket being full of bacon. He has tried stealing about 50 packets of bacon. Oxford is close to the Cotswolds which is nice and Abingdon Flying club if that appeals to you. It also is the home of the shark house. http://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/med...-roof-very.jpg |

Crewe comes top in Hot Housing Index 2016 8 September 2016 | By Allister Hayman Crewe has emerged as the top place to live in the UK, edging out North West neighbours Chester and Stockport, according to Property Week’s latest Hot Housing Index. Chester is very nice, and to a lesser extent, Stockport. But Crewe? What is there to speak of outside of the railway station? |
Re: Nice places to live in the U.K.?
Hi I have lived in Nz for 22 years and originally come from Kent. My partner is from Yorkshire and has only been in NZ for 18 months and is very homesick. We are heading back to the uk at the end of the month for a holiday and catch up of family and friends. But we are also gong back to have a open minded look at living back there. We are looking at Lincoln as we have done the rural life and city life and want a bit of both. We have my 83 year old mum coming with us so it's needs to be a nice area wherever we move to. Any thoughts about that area would be great, plus any info on pensions (not there yet!) as I have been out of the uk since 1995. And any other stuff that might help? Cheers in advance
