Proactive was my experience of NHS Highland (part of NHS Scotland). All that sereening for conditions I had never heard of. They aslo signed me up for a course called HEIDI. Highland Education in Diet and Insulin where we had three sessions showing us to use insulin PROPERLY. As a result I can now vary my exercise regime, food intake and insulin use.

So far I have only had one experience with helicopter transport to hospital (after a heart attack). That too was courtesy of NHS. God bless Nye Bevan !

You are lucky. When my mum was first prescribed insulin, about ten years ago, she asked if a nurse would show her how to inject. She was told that there was no need, since there were instructions on the side of the packet.

I started using insulin when I was living in Saudi Arabia. The Indian Doctor at our University Health Center took some time to show me how to do the injections. Thank you Dr Tolani !

I did not understand the relationship between insulin, food intake, exercise and blood-sugar levels until I went on that NHS course !
