Default New UK / US books

Seeing as there are a couple of threads on here about UK/US tv shows and not being much of a TV watcher I thought I'd start a thread about books.
What are you reading / have recently read that you thought was brilliant and you would recommend to your fellow B.E-ers.

I have just finished Bring up the bodies by Hilary Mantel. Briiliant. Not as good as the first in the trilogy (Wolf Hall) but an excellent read. Even if you have no interest in tudor history this is still a great read just for the court suspense, its almost thriller-ish in parts .

So, what are you reading right now?

Playboy magazine - they have some good articles.

Seriously though, Terry Pratchett released a new book yesterday (Dodger, not Discworld I think) so I might try to get hold of that when it's available here.

There's that thread...in the lounge, so a little more general...

At the mo, reading the free Vertex Volume 1 and a Tom Clancy book.

Waiting for the library to get the new Richard Castle Book, "Frozen Heat", and also waiting for the new Bernard Cornwall and Ken Follett books to come out.

The US hardbacks of Terry Pratchett are awful quality. They are really thin with sloping pages. I got the UK one on Amazon for the last book and had it shipped. Worked out around the same price anyway.

So I'm not the only one who still intentionally buys the UK versions and ships them from Amazon.co.uk at great expense. Though usually to avoid poor American editing hack jobs.

That said I am so behind on books I meant to read two years ago...

One common trick of American publishers is to give the book a different title when published in the US... to trick libraries to buy the same book twice.

I hate the US editing especially spelling / americanisms. pointless

I use www.thebookdepository.com

Free postage worldwide. Often prices that beat Amazon and they stock all the good stuff you can't often get here, such as the annual Private Eye review, etc. Very frequently you can order up the UK paperback edition before it is even in hardcover over here.

No affiliation other than a delighted customer of theirs.

In fact we do.. we have it in the stacks, 1828 - present. We also get the New Statesman and The Oldie, and several other UK magazines. I'm wicked; I've (quietly) pumped up our UK subscriptions over the years, we get this wonderful magazine for instance;

It's a literary review, but of older books, many out-of-print.

Book depository is ace. My old Mum got me into that first. I also like to buy used books on Amazon as a) they're dirt cheap and b) doing my bit for the environment and all that. If you're in Amazon prime like me you get free two day shipping too. I find their used books ace especially for buying books you're not too sure you're going to like and you dont want to go to expense of a new one.
