You can check your student loan balance online:

I’ve been in Germany for 2.5 years and have been working for 1 year and 8 months. I know my loan is a significant amount but I’m worried that returning to the UK aim the future will incur major penalties for the time I have worked and haven’t paid. You have definitely reassured me, however this sounds like an experience from a while ago and perhaps you weren’t away as long?

I’m considering making myself known now, or whether it’s better just to wait until I return to the U.K., if I do…

Any other thoughts on this would be great. In any case many thanks for your advice.

regards
I was working in France and Germany for nearly two and a half years so similar to yourself. If you not have filed your P85 I would do that now listing the date you left the UK.

If you want to start your repayments from abroad then you can check how much you will pay here:

Just wondering: I permanently emigrated from the UK back in the 80’s and don’t remember ever doing a P85 (I was always PAYE and only part-time overall the year I left). I’m sure any money due back to me has long been relinquished, but I don’t care about that at this point. As far as I can tell, there’s no penalty for not filing a P85, correct?

No, HMRC just gets to keep any income tax you overpay.

Thanks for your advice here.

I left uni and went abroad. I can't imagine I would get many tax rebates as I only undertook a few part time roles in the UK quite a while back.
Apologies if this sounds dim, but apart from possible tax refunds, does this help in other ways? I imagine this would alert SLC.

Many thanks

Thank you BiP. You probably can’t confirm or deny, but you must be ex-Home Office or something with the amount of knowledge you have about all these things. 🙂

If you were under your annual tax threshold then you’ll get all the tax back you paid that year so it’s worth doing. I can confirm that I had no follow-up from the SLC when I filed mine.

Hello!

Great reading. My own case is a little different as a couple of stories related by members, but may be the same outcome, not sure.
I left England in the mid 90's and live in the US. I left some debt, but never seemed to get any correspondence about it. From what I have read, this debt does not go away, even though it was over 30 years ago. I want to try and find out if i have any collections or such against me, but cant seem to do a credit check without a recent UK address. I want to return to UK for a trip and at the same time see if its worth drawing any potential UK state pension (myself and my wife worked for 16+ years before we left). I have many questions, but does anyone on the post forum have any knowledge about what is likely to greet me when I walk into Loydds and ask to open a bank account, and use my Nat Ins number? What is this 'SLC' mentioned in several responses?

Many thanks in advance!

Lloyds will aks you for your address and when you say somewhere in the US they are likely to say No to opening a bank account.

I will be using my sister-in-laws address in Manchester, to get over that hurdle. But what about credit checks/debt from the 90s?

You may be okay as the checks have eased somewhat but unless your name is on your sister-in-laws utility bill or some other form of proof that you live there you may be out of luck as you do have to affirm that you are a resident in the UK to open a UK bank account.

From the Lloyds bank website on opening an account.

https://www.lloydsbank.com/current-a...k-account.html
  • Tax Residence
Which countries you are a tax resident in, or have been in the last two years. A Tax Identification No (TIN) should be entered for each non UK tax residence
  • Current Home Address
Details of full current address inc Postcode

Where address is BFPO (British Forces Post Office)
Service Number, Rank, Unit, Regiment, Operation Name (if applicable) and BFPO Number will be required

When did you move to your current address
If you have lived in your current address for less than 3 years, you will also be asked to provide details of any previous addresses you've held during this period

    Residential Status

I believe you no longer have to provide proof of address for opening many UK bank accounts, although I expect you are required to tick a box saying you are a UK resident and the bank may carry out background checks (my speculation).

The Lloyds website implies that you don't need proof of address if your proof of identity is a UK driving licence, passport or residence permit:

What can you use to prove your identity?

In most cases you will only need to produce one of the following:
  • A current UK photo driving licence
  • Passport from the United Kingdom
  • Biometric Residence Permit card
If you cannot provide one of the items above, you will need to bring two documents. One document from each of the following lists instead:

Proof of identity

Proof of address

Yes, they probably won't ask you prove that you are resident. As you say, you may simply have to lie to them.

When our daughter moved back in November last year she opened a Chase UK account and they also didn't ask for proof of residence but she did have to state that she was a resident in the UK.
