My soon to be husband moved here to Norway with me a year and a half ago. I wasn't ready to leave things behind here, but now I am. Last night we decided that, alright, we move back to the UK. It is a dream for me to experience the English culture close up! We already made a battle plan to make a plan, and the time schedule is 6 months here. We have our summer holiday here, then we get married in august/september and leave notice at work and apartment. around august. Then we pack up and leave! I am very excited, and it seemed to me that he is very excited to get back as well.
We are thinking about Manchester, he is from Leeds so it won't be so far away from his parents, and I will be close to the airport so I can easily go home and visit my Family.
Anyone here have a knowledge about Manchester? What are the good areas to live in? We have some savings so we will move over without a job and look for a job while there. He is in IT business and I work in an archive as an consultant and have a librarian education.
This is so exciting, had to share with someone! Thanks for Reading.

I don't know Manchester but just wanted to say that you will get a lot more for your money there than down south if you plan on buying a property.
Thomas Cook do a little guide book to Manchester available on Amazon.co.UK you might want to get. Good luck!

Thanks for the tip, will look into it!
Yes we plan to buy in the future, but I believe the rules are that you have to live there for 6monthts before you buy?

You can buy on day 1, you can buy before you even get there. But you won't get a mortgage until you have built up some credit history.
If you husband to be has been away less than 6 years, he at least will have a credit history. The rules on lending changed in the last couple of years and each bank and building society employs their own as well.
I'd always recommend renting anyway, especially if you don't know the area, it gives you a chance to explore and find somewhere you want to live rather than just buy and hope you made the right decision.

apskinner - thanks for the clarification! Yes we will rent for a while first, we have agreed on that. Need some time to settle down and get a job etc. I am a bit nervous, haven't told our family yet as it is still 6months in the future. We just told them yesterday about us getting married this summer. So.. Guess we wait a bit longer. A bit nervous about quitting my job here though.

Hi,
I know Manchester very well, we lived overseas for a number of years and when we returned to the North West we were surprised at the cost of homes in the nicer areas of Manchester this we think is mainly due to the demand for homes and the surge in popularity of Manchester as a city. If you do not know the areas then you will really have to do your homework, if your move is just because you want to be near the Airport I would consider Leeds and the surrounding areas as well, it does not take you long (depends on traffic) to get to Manchester Airport from Leeds and there is also the train direct to Manchester Airport, a huge amount of Yorkshire people travel from Yorkshire to the Manchester Airport for their holiday etc flights. The bonus is your partner will know Leeds and the areas the surround Leeds already, you will be near family and also Yorkshire especially North Yorkshire is a lovely county. Good luck ps we did not have any trouble with credit history etc even after nearly 14 years overseas.

My friends lived in Sale near Manchester and it was a nice leafy quiet suburb but easy commuting by train. I spent some time with them and traveled everywhere by train.

My partner is Manc but has been living with me in Aus for some time. We are looking at moving back to Manc but I am struggling to find good information on nice suburbs. Can anyone list any? Hopefully no more than half an hour into the city centre but also low crime. We are happy to rent a terraced house but eventually want to buy a semi with a nice garden.
I keep looking on RightMove but don't know what's what.
Sorry for hijacking the thread but it could help you also

Hi Depends on your budget (like most places around the world) here are a few areas we prefer. Bramhall, Wilmslow, Knutsford, Higher Poynton, High Lane, Marple, Hale and Hale Barns then there are areas in the Peak District with train links to Manchester. There are other areas of Manchester that are good and a bit nearer to the City but mainly just pockets of good areas. Good luck
