I don't post on here much , but have been following threads for a few years. A big thank you to everyone who contributes, it has saved a lot of head aches.
I haven't been home in nearly 18 years. Even as I type it, it doesn't seem that long. The last few years the gnawing feeling (can anyone relate ?) of going back has been at me. So this August my wife and I are returning to England.
We have been sorting things out this end, and have made a date of the first of June to have everything ready. That way if any last minute things come up we have plenty of time to sort them out.
I will use this post to update over the next 6 months. The main things we need to accomplish is getting our dogs ready to go with us, and my waiting to hear if my wife will be accepted to Oxford to pursue her PHd.

Hi
My husband and I have been thinking of making
the move for several and have decided to
go back in 12 months. I've been in Aystralia
21 years but my longing to go and live in the
UK is getting stronger. My husband is australian,
and is happy to move.
Good luck with everything, look forward to hearing
about how it goes for you and your wife.

Hi Cambridgeman! Well it looks like we have the same sort of timeline so it will be interesting to follow your journey. Coincidentally we lived in Cambridge before we moved to the U.S. and would love to return there but it all depends on jobs for us. Are you moving back to Cambridge?

Hi, I am moving back to the Newmarket area after 22 years this August. Yes I have had that gnawing feeling for about 10 years and I decided last year I am done here and ready to go back home. Taking 2 of my kids and 1 dog, this should be fun lol.

We too are planning to move back in June (to Scotland) and will be bringing our dog. We actually spent a year in Scotland 3 years ago and took our dog then. The regulations are even easier to deal with this time around as the quarantine rules have changed. Still expensive to transport him though (he's a Rhodeisan Ridgeback)!

Can really relate to that Cambridgeman. You tend to ignore it for a while, or put it down to other issues, perhaps not wanting to fully comprehend it. But it's there. Like it or not. Good luck with your move, and I admire you for having had the determination, courage and strength to deal with that odd feeling, so hard to put into words and so hard to get your head around.

Hubby and I went for a weekend in Ipswich last week. Stayed in a really cheap Travelodge by the uni and waterfront. Never been before but it was very nice there.

We're moving back to Europe (UK & France ca.50/50) this summer as well.

We are all flocking back, well I am sure there are many leaving. You have been gone a long time Novacastrian. Good on you for making it for that long.

We've thrived and been happy everywhere we've lived since first emigrating.
I retire on July 1st this year....on to the next place(s).

Hi everyone,
I left the UK in 1974 to work in Germany, where I met my British husband. Before getting married I went to work in Norway, then Holland and back to Germany. We went back to the UK for a while, then back to Germany, back to UK (we were both contractors). My husband then took a permanent post in the UK but we still moved about a lot with his job, first to Egypt for 18 months - it would have been longer for me but I was expecting my second child, and I returned to the UK leaving my husband on his own in Egypt! After that we went to South Africa for a couple of years. When we returned to the UK my husband was offered a permanent job in the aerospace industry in Munich which was great for us as we loved the country. We lived there for 10 years. The aerospace industry went into decline, my husband was made redundant, so we sold our house and moved back to the UK. It was OK in the beginning, but over the years the country has declined in more ways than one, and for people out there who are thinking of returning to the UK, think hard. The cost of living in the UK is sky high, wages are poor, and people struggle to make ends meet. The education system and the NHS are struggling to cope with the influx of people coming into the UK. As for myself and my husband we retired to Portugal last year, not to the Algarve, but to the Silver Coast, where we live quite comfortably with our pensions.

HI,
Can I join this thread? We are moving back in either March or August from the US (been here 3.5 years ). My husband has been offered a job which has come along at just the right time as we were starting to think it was time.
Our situation is complicated a little by the fact that I am pregnant with No.2 (due June) so the company are trying to decide if they want us as early as March (gives me time to set up my prenatal care) or wait until baby is here and we get his paperwork together in August.

You may or may not consider this to be a good thing.
