Person moves and finds out it is nothing like the hype and they think "Hey.....the UK was not that bad after all"
Welll thats what I think anyway. |

Not sure how accurate Macleans is but I guess the whole article is warning people here not to be too complacent. Although the US is in a big mess and we have tighter rulers and regs on borrowing, according to stats Canada, debt levels were up by 7% during the recession where as elsewhere they're shrinking....apparently!
I can't get my head around how people survive here in BC. My husband makes $50 000 plus and I earn a part time wage of between 12 and 15000. We have a very small mortgage, a small line of credit and no credit card debt but we still see our debt growing. Friends have way higher mortgages, often earn less or similar and seem to ski much more than we do! I don't get it. |

Noticed the same thing myself when we were there. Neighbours with quad bikes, speed boats, RV's etc. We had a good income and were lucky not to have a mortgage and yet there's no way we could do the same without being in serious debt. I think it's a case of people living beyond their means and on their line of credit.
If you're a middle income professional here you're screwed but if you log, fish, or you are a self employed carpenter you can work for a few months and then eat bon bons (or ride quads) for the rest of the year....or both. Drives me nuts whole hazel nuts! And yes, they're all living on credit, it's true. It amazes me how people are so relaxed about it and they truly have no chance of ever paying it off. But I guess that's the plan...... |
Re: More coming back from Canada?
Check my wording again- I never said it would never happen, just that we bankers take very careful look at mtg app and the CDN default rate is very low. So its not likely- I for one never took overtime into account- not only that but the other side of that is that if someone lost thier job, they would still be in the SH*T and not be able to pay their mtg. Lots of folk in Oshawa for example have lost jobs due to the car plants- have had foreclosure cos of that fact, no income = no bills can be paid. Economical reasons not lax lending.

The situation regarding the banks was also reported in newspapers such as the Financial Post and the Globe and Mail, not just the Liberal press, and the concerns came from the highest levels in the banks and not from the clerks at the front desk. Unemployment is high, salaries are being driven down, and household debt is increasing at an alarming rate. I know from my own experience that, although they should not, banks have taken overtime into account when issuing mortgages. I don't buy this idea of navel watching and saying that this could never happen in Canada.
Of course, Canada Mortgage and Housing say everything is fine but they are quasi government anyway. |
