Crime depends on the area you live in. I wouldn't go to the park with my children where we are living currenlty. High Wycombe used to be cheap, but it has gone up loads in the past year and will only do so more when they have finished with the revamping. Currently you can't even get a 1 bedroom flat for under £150k.
We're hoping the house prices will crash so we can afford to buy (hate renting!), but it just doesn't look like they're going to allow that to happen. Chrimbo shopping = Christmas shopping. I am just a Mall junkie though, which is probably why I love MK. |

We seen lots of houses in the 300k range in HW..ok MK is just a bit cheaper..but cant get friendly with HW somehow...school would not be a problem thought, because of grammar school system...don't know why MK has not got it..the only school they offered us in MK was a 19% GCSE school..for an all excellent student:curse:

The house we wanted to by was in the catchment area for the best school around with 90%..but they are full and would not take us....and no waiting list either... |
Re: Milton keynes?
Hi all Im very new and only been a member for a couple of days, i was searching through all the posts and read all the replies with interest. I was born and bought up in Eastcote / Ruislip Middlsex, and then my family moved to Chalfont St Peter. Well you cant even get a garage there for £150K!! anyway in laws are from Denham village, so My husband and I decided we couldnt afford to move anywhere near our family!!! We went to MK bought a house, and lost £25K in the crash ( bearing in mind this was 20 years ago)! I didnt mind MK but you only really see people and everyday life, ie dog walking and kids playing in public places. Some of the estates are spookily quiet and we found that we never got to really know anybody as everyone commuted.
We then moved to Hanslope, a small village between MK and Northampton!! One bus in and 1 bus out a day!!! Didnt work, too small and everyone knew what everyone else was doing ( wife swapping!! if anyones interested!!). Eventually we could afford to move back down as far as Watford, which was very busy and now quite expensive. Kids went to kings Langley school, very nice. We have now moved the furthest away we have ever been, and live in Northampton. Up and coming area, my girls go to fantastic schools, and the whole area is being regenerated. Lots of lovely villages, £300K will buy you a lovely house. Commutable distance about 1 hour 20mins to Northwood. Easy driving to Mk for your shopping. Very central and loads of work. Yes it has its problems as does everywhere. But if your looking to tick all your boxes, ie good schools, affordable housing, friendly people and central for commuting, it may be worth a look. If I can help with any estate agents or any info, I would be glad to. Why are we going to Canada then??? for the snow!!!! |
Re: Milton keynes?
Campion School, Bugbrooke, Northampton
Mixed school - very good NSG Northampton school for girls Spinney Hill - Music college ( my daughter attends this one) They have school yellow buses that you pay for yearly and are fantastic. Just for the school girls and cover a huge area. They have early and late buses and masses of after school activities and clubs. Check out their results and see what you think. They are secondary, we dont have grammer 12+ here. Also try Jackson Grundy Estate Agents to get an idea of house prices. It may be just that bit too far for you, but may get you a step on the property ladder with a view to moving further south later on. |

Re: Milton keynes?
Hi all.
Just to chip in I am in MK and have been since 1979. I moved from Wendover near Aylesbury when I was 8 and yes Aylesbury has gone downhill. Wendover and a lot of the "villages" around there are full of people that mostly have their heads up their own ares and a bit on the snobby side. The thing is it has such a stigma attached to it that it is just not cool to say you live in MK. O.K so I would not want to retire here but as someone with a young family I love the place as there is so much to do. I run and it has so many lakes and green areas e.t.c. I work in houses and villages all over Herts, Beds and Bucks and I know MK is not that bad, I could afford to live somewhere else but I like it here. I am open minded about things. It has seen a downturn with Somalians and others but what city hasn't. I get fed up with the whole "snob" thing in England with areas e.t.c. I have worked in Woburn and the villages around here over the years and most people are not real hearty people and seem a bit on the snobby side. ( I have nothing against success but hate pretentious people). As for villages I personally cannot stand them, everyone knows when you shit and its always a few miles on a round trip to buy anything. O.K defence over M.K done I just get on the case when most people that knock it have only been here for a 2 bob concert or as a rep with work. BTW, we had a murder last month  yes it really happened in a city, can you believe it. |

I'm not sure if it would be the right city to grow up for two young girls... but you right there is a lot to do...shame really..could be a nice city to live in..and the houses a quit cheap.. |

Hi Eurochamp. I aggree it is a shame as it is a "nice" city. A lot of kids that grow up in villages do no better than their city counterparts in terms of drug and alcohol abuse, O.K the villages are more safe in terms of violent attacks e.t.c but if you allow for size of population then who knows My point was that people pick up on murders, attacks e.t.c as if it is unique to Milton Keynes, Milton Keynes remember is a CITY. Do a search on the BBC news site and put in keywords like "murder" or "rape" and you will see it is everywhere. Milton Keynes is no worse than any other city and my point being if you like city living it is the best of the worse if that makes sense.:) |

when & where??? |
