Post Manchester to be England's Las Vegas?

The govt. has announced where England's first new 'super casino' is going to be located.....the 'winner' is Manchester:

http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/...565224,00.html

The govt. is also going to allow TV advertising for gambling at casinos and betting shop for the first time.

Some interesting comments here:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.../ublview30.xml

After living in South East Asia for a few years, it never ceased to amaze me how the Chinese population in particular, were obsessed with gambling. I do wonder how the growth of numerous casinos around the UK will affect people's spending habits.

I've been to Vegas and Atlantic City and not the least interested in gambling....but I've seen patrons putting down $500 in a single bet at the roulette tables and losing the lot of it (and getting angry about it).

A little surprised about the location, can't help feeling that the Glazer family has had some part in the choice.

I wouldn't have thought so - they're Orthodox Jews and therefore supposed to shun things like drinking and gambling.

There was a lot of talk of opening a casino when they bought Manchester United a year or so ago. Last I heard they were checking to see if the NFL gambling rules applied to them because they own an NFL team.

I wouldn't like coming out of a casino late at night in Beswick.

Gambling does increase crime as people steal to support their addiction....

If its not that could it be because the weather is so similar to Vegas.....maybe not...

There has been a large casino in manchester for years now which has operated in a similar fashion to those in Vegas. The meals and drinks wern't free but were really inexpensive and the place was open virtually all night.. The other thing is the amount of money spent there. We have a large Chinese community and they were the really big spenders when it came to gambling. The suprise to me was that as I left Manchester for the States last November the way ahead favourite for the first super casino was Blackpool...

There's a casino just off Cheetham Hill Road, (before the curry house...Saffron ...thats the place ).

Manchester has the geographical position and the road and rail links ....Blackpool had turds on the beach ...

You're right about the road and rail links. Theres also a big casino at the bottom of Regent Road, as well as the original one by China Town so I can't see building a super casino in the city being a problem.... and it's a bloody site warmer than Arkansas as we speak....

I wonder how the locals have taken to having a Yank as owner - it's been a year or so right?

I think your right, it must be a year by now. The locals have quietened down. United are top of the Premiership and playing better than they have done in years. In fact they are playing so well that I'm worried that we may not get our customary three points when they come to the City of Manchester Stadium for their yearly spanking!
