JOB HUNTING IN THE UK – WHAT’S IT LIKE ???
Hi there,
Would like to hear ( and I am sure it would be interesting for others too) about recent experiences doing the job hunt think in the UK and for us – particularly in Scotland.
Things like:
Are most of the jobs recruited for via agencies ?
Are there any particular good agencies ?
What are the best online sites ?
My experience is in Sales Management in the electrical ( not retail ), IT and security ( CCTV etc) industries.
My experience of the job hunt here in NZ has been totally frustrating, we are in Auckland and I have applied for around 220 jobs since April and my conversion rate for interviews is about 10% and 50% of that converted to in-front of companies.
The biggest frustration here is that they are SO SLOW. Companies / agencies will keep the apply-by date open anything up to four weeks and another two-three to process the CVs. I was getting heaps of response explaining they have been “ overwhelmed by the response” so I started asking what warranted that title and told anything over 20 applicants. For me it just shows that NZ is a very slack place.
When I got that response from a very large international recruitment agency I asked the consultant how their London office staff cope where they might receive 100 applications for a particular good position. You can imagine the response.
I did post my CV up on S1 jobs ( UK Site) in Feb this year and had four invitations to apply for positions and by comparison, the four years that my CV was up on the New Zealand Seek site have never had 1 contact.
Cheers

Try gumtree.com and jobsite.co.uk. Both good sites.
