Everything is going to end up on one of the container ships, the only difference is who packs and collects your stuff locally, so just choose a local company you're happy with and has good reviews and reputation.

A subcontractor will be collecting your container from the port on arrival in the UK. and delivering it to your new home, so not the same company.

Hi, and welcome

A great place to start for shipping is to check out FIDI website for a list of FAIM certified international removal companies that serve your area to make sure whoever you're using is fully qualified, licensed and independently vetted for overseas moving. Depending on your preference you can use a removal company based in the UK or Canada so you have quite a lot of choice.

You can choose a company based in Canada, or the UK - this thread explains a little bit more about that and how to decide: Should I book an international removal company at origin or destination? . Hope it helps!

I'm sure some of the other members will be able to give you personal recommendations based on their experience too.

I have some personal Decor items that I want to ship from my home in US to my UK home as I'm now living in the UK permanently, I'm not bringing large furniture. How does this work now due to Brexit ? Are custom duties/taxes charged when shipping personal items to UK ? I'm keeping my USA home as a rental and just want the nicer items shipped to UK .. Thankful for any advice

Hi,
Imports from the USA have always been subject to duties and taxes (it's only movements within the EU that have changed). However, you can import duty and tax free if you meet the following conditions:
- your permanent home is moving to the UK
- you are importing the goods within 12 months of moving to the UK
- you've been living permanently outside of the UK for a continuous period of at least 12 months (i.e., your US home was your full time residence, not a holiday home/second home)
- you've owned the items for at least 6 months before importing
- you didn't get them under a duty free/tax free scheme
- you will retain them for your own use (not lend, hire or sell within 12 months

You need to apply for Transfer of Residence relief with customs before moving the items so you get a URN to clear duty/tax free.

This page provides lots of information that may be useful. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/transfer...-great-britain (including link to apply for ToR)
Hope that helps!

If you don't qualify for the exception from import duty, bear in mind that the duty is assessed on the value at the time of entry, not the cost/ price you paid, so be sure to use, er, appropriate valuations for your "used furniture and bric-a-brac."
