Mam's close to 80, and until about 3 years ago was incredibly active - gym, yoga, aquarobics, etc. Then she hit some circulation problems in her feet and has aged drastically in the last 2-3 years. In one way I'm fortunate that both my sisters still live within a mile of her, so she has help close at hand if she needs it.

My Dad came out to LA, first time he had ever flown and he was 70. Best beach he had ever seen before was Brighton, I took him to Santa Monica and he said 'it's all right'. He asked what kind of trees they were? I said Palm trees, he said 'not very nice are they'

I've managed 2 trips in 11 years. None of my family will come to the U.S. for various reasons. Oh well.......

60 is the new 40. She's lucky to be relatively young and retired and in good health.

Looking forward to my first trip home, in 5 weeks:) Would have been here 9 months when we travel.

Only thing worrying me is if my DD doesn't want to come back, but she has to as shes only 9.

I introduced my dad to an American/Chinese friend, he said, " oh look she looks just like a little coolie " I could have died on the spot.

As far as trips to the UK, just lately I've been going back 2 or 3 times a year, before that is was about once every 3 years, sometimes longer.

Re: How often do you go back to the U.K.?

Probably on average once a year .. when we lived in England in the 80s we always spent a month or six weeks in Florida each winter. The most was the year my father died, I think I went to England four times that year.

Got my sister to visit the US once, in 1999, I don't think she was very impressed. Could never get my parents to come here. They had hated the US and all it stood for since 1956 (Suez crisis.) That was why I married an American, to rile them up.

Once a year, while my parents were alive. Last two trips back have been for their funerals. I don't feel the need to go back anymore.

We moved here in 2008 and have gone back every year as hubby's work paid for free flights and 'insisted' they had to be used to fly to home country.

Now that we have green cards we lose that perk and if we have to spend 'our' money I'll be going elsewhere thank you very much.

Used to be every two years to renew the I94's, now we have our greens cards I have no intention on going back. The OH and kids are welcome to go visit but I'll only go under sufferance.

My Mam came over and loved it, especially the shopping :), however my in-laws came over and refused to do anything except sit in the house or garden and go to restaurants, same as they did in the UK. They visited for 5 weeks and we were so relieved when we put them on the plane home ;)

Re: How often do you go back to the U.K.?

Been here 3 years and been back to UK once for my brothers wedding.
My mum and stepdad have not visited us here and probably won't either. Same goes for my dad and stepmum. My brother and sister in law have not visited either but have said they want to. May have to wait a while as they are having their first baby in September. My brother in law has visited us twice. He tacks us on to visits he makes to the US. My mother in law has been once and is coming back this summer with my father in law. That in itself is a major accomplishment as he hates flying and finds the flight from Luton/East Midlands to Portugal as a long flight! I think us telling him it is hot and sunny and we have beaches nearby have been a reason he's changing his mind. Plus we have their only grandchildren so that is a big pull. I don't think we will go back to the UK for a while. Last visit was very stressful and resulted in a major falling out between me and my brother and our stepdad that has still not been sorted.
