Gibraltar is treated as part of the UK for most EC purposes, the only one of the 14 British Overseas Territories to have this status.

Like any other British territory it is *fully* British, however it is not a part of the United Kingdom. Gibraltar, for example, has its own immigration laws, tax system and legal system distinct from the UK. The Gibraltar government has full control over all domestic matters with the exception of defence and foreign affairs which are a UK responsibility. For this reason, Gibraltar is not represented in the Westminster Parliament, although is now part of the South West constituency for the "European Parliament."

Gibraltarians are nevertheless full British citizens.

If one did accept the argument that the British Overseas Territories are part of the UK, then Gib still wouldn't be the warmest - that accolade would probably go to the British Indian Ocean Territory, just south of the equator.

Jersey in the Channel Islands is probably warmer than the mainland UK, but as a Crown Dependency it is not part of the UK for most administrative and government purposes either.

At the risk of fuelling an already tired argument, I'm not sure that this is a very good definition of a Commonwealth country: the Queen is the head of the Commonwealth (as an organisation), but she is not the sovereign of every Commonwealth country, many of which are not monarchies but republics and therefore have a president. The Queen is the sovereign (head of state) of Canada, Australia and New Zealand, for example, but not of India, Pakistan or South Africa.

Indeed - Jersey and the other Channel Islands (Guernsey, Alderney and Sark) and the Isle of Man, as Crown Dependencies, are not part of the United Kingdom (or, for that matter, the European Union).

I'm so glad this is sorted out. I got hardly any sleep last night worrying about it. Now, is there some other rock we could argue about?

All the time mankind is on this planet there will always be rocks to argue over.

What about Cuba? Isn't it time that kicked-off again?

Cue Disney theme tune - Circle of Life. It'll probably be playing as a background theme over the whole island.

Whats the basis for this so called fact then. Germany is a huge country and for it to be twice as sunny would mean something like 3,000 hours of sunshine per annum and sunnier than California or Cape Town. The BBC weather site says German cities like Frankfurt have a little more average sunshine than say London in the mid 1,500 days but Bognor and the South East of England blows them away with recent averages in the low 2,000's.

I think you have missed the point here. The average sunshine figures directly relate to the hours of sunshine experienced. What we are saying is parts of the UK are better than others and perhaps before you go moving to Germany to enjoy the great weather maybe check out the figures for the South Coast of the UK as you may be in for a pleasant surprise.

That said, this lack of extremes is bad news for many; less hours of sunshine and more ''ordinary'' overcast weather. Germany gets twice the amount of sunshine, and many people would love to have sun and light even at the expense of snow and cold which people in Finland or Scandinavia get.

Just read it that's all.....it only shows that you can't believe all you read....(!)
..for what it's worth, I lived in Continental Europe, and it has to be said I found it appreciably either warmer, or sunnier than in the SE of England - based on calling home from time to time and doing a comparison.

My point is that the UK has a maritime climate which is amongst the most temperate in the world (+), but that in itself is a (-), depending on who you talk to..I personally would rather have extremes, or cold winters and then hot summers, if you will, which is neither here nor there.

Cheers

BM
