as someone has already posted, a "mum" is based on a chrysanthemum. These days you use an artificial flower head which is stuck onto card and adorned with ribbons representing your school.
The boys give mums to the girls and the girls give a garter, which is worn on their sleeve and is similar to the mum but smaller.
I'll post picks when I've finished making this one.

We had Sadie Hawkins, too! Although I only went once -- can't remember why now. My mom made me and my boyfriend (later ex-husband) these really cool Indian costumes... I was 16 and fancied one of my brothers friends and I used to play this all the time at home. I was thrilled to bits when he decided to come along with a whole group of friends to a local disco one Friday night.
