as someone has already posted, a "mum" is based on a chrysanthemum. These days you use an artificial flower head which is stuck onto card and adorned with ribbons representing your school.
The boys give mums to the girls and the girls give a garter, which is worn on their sleeve and is similar to the mum but smaller.
I'll post picks when I've finished making this one.
