OK - well the flu is by no means a British phenomenon, in fact I have caught more stuff here in Aus due to presenteeism and mucus warriors coming in to work sick and spreading their germs than ever I caught in the UK.

Tell me about it! I nearly died from pneumonia 1 week after getting off the plane at Heathrow! Doc suspects I got some virus on the plane which turned to pnuemonia. It was a very rapid decline! I'm still not recovered 6mths later

Hi Jack.

Since you have a good lifestyle in UK, why not if you can afford it, get a house in Southern Europe. You can do what I do, my businesses are in UK, but I live in Spain and commute, doing a couple of weeks in UK, couple of weeks or more in Spain, sometime 4 at a time. I also travel to other countries also as we now have offices elsewhere. But by living in both countries, as I have houses in both, I get the sunshine, healthy outdoor lifestyle and the wet and miserable lifestyle when I'm in UK......and all the flu germs etc, which tend to find me when I get back. Prior to me doing this I couldn't get over the itch. I didn't like UK, and wished to go back to Oz to live. By coming up with this solution, my itch to go back to Oz has nearly gone, and I'm not the other side of the world, for friends and family now. I personally couldn't live in UK full time, this way has solved it for me. I get the best of both worlds and positives of both countries and lifestyles.

I know more and more people now working for British companies and coming over for periods of time but living in places like Spain, France, Italy etc. Providing I have internet, phone and not far from an airport, it is like catching a train for me, and I get sun, and healthy living 20 weeks of the year and still able to earn an income. You could also do what I do and rent out your house to a company let. I make £50-60k a year, by doing that alone, and that isn't my main business. So technically I could stay in Spain all year around if I chose to do so, but I don't. I think it also would bore me if I lived there full time.

Might be an alternative solution for you without too much sacifice and going into the unknown and expense. I believe in making things happen and I didn't want to live in Uk full time and Oz was too far away in the end, but I missed the lifestyle, but missed family when over there. I found a solution that ticked my boxes and made me happier and I lost that itch, which took ages to lose until I came up with this solution. Spain isn't my long term solution, when my parents pop their cloggs, then I'll be looking for another one, probably further away and I won't be working in UK then. Life is what you make it at the end of the day and we are a long time dead, and never know when it is going to end, so it's best to live it to how we want while we can.

Nowadays, I don't think you have to give up one lifestyle for another, I think with careful planning you can have all your cake. There will be never be 100% perfection, there will always be something we don't quite like and it isn't always easy, the main thing is how long is the column with ticks in the boxes of positives to negatives. If the positives are more then it is best to focus on them, if the negatives are the main factor, then it is time to make changes.

The grass can be greener, my lifestyle in both Oz and Spain has been totally different to mine in UK and it suits me better. But it also best sometimes to remember places with affection, because often they are not the same when we return. As much as I wanted to return to Oz, I think now I wouldn't find it the same, for me, it is best to keep moving forward and experiencing new adventures and people.

I hope you find a solution to scratch that itch and get what you want. Don't give up yet, you might come up with something under those cold covers....:D

Thanks Mercedes, some great ideas, but I am not that successful ,that I could run two homes, also my children are still at school age and that would still be a big change, however I appreciate your post and food for thought in the future

You would definateley get more sex if your wife was anything like me,as the lack of comfort and support ,being friendless in a strange country with no close family and friends, would mean that she would need more closeness and support from you ,in any way it was available....but just my opinion.x

Ah, but if you're friendless in a strange country, with no close family and friends, you may resent the partner who "made" you move there and therefore not want to go anywhere near them ;)

Turn up the radiators till it's unbearable then do it under the covers, that'll let you know how hot sweaty is just as miserable as a bit chilly under the covers
The thing about moving to somewhere hotter than UK is, most of us have only experienced it as a summer holiday before, so thats really not the same. Out to dinner late, sleeping in, swimming when it's a bit hot, etc, isn't like living/working in it.
Running about, getting things done on time, climbing into a car that can cook dinner on the dashboard it's so hot and then trying not to look so sweaty when you get where your going can be tough. Plus mowing the lawn, pulling weeds etc at 40 is no fun.
It's the same life you have only instead of moaning about the wet/cold you get to moan about the heat/sunburn. As much as people say they won't, eventually you will.
If I ever move home to UK I've promised never to moan about the NHS and the weather, not sure how long I'd last on the weather part.

I agree about hot weather being miserable, but it's another of those individual things. I know people who love it. I was in Chicago when there was an awful heat wave that was killing people. I almost got heatstroke on a 10 minute walk. But my friend was loving it and we passed two idiots jogging in it! But they looked happy. I also know people -- very few of them -- who truly love a cold (talking -20 on down here) winter. I know someone who's basic requirement for a place to live is as much sun as possible and never, ever below zero.

Travel has, as always, broadened my mind and I know what I need to be comfortable. It's a temperate climate. No extremes. It is hard to know that before living with it, though, as people here say. I also know what I don't mind -- cloudy skies and rain.

So what's everyone here's ideal climate?

BTW, aren't there places in Australia with a sort of British climate? Down the south?

Bevm Tassie (Tasmania) would be the closest thing to a British climate as it is quite far south and has a good rainfall.

Not too many people migrate to there though as there are not many job opportunities, it is beautiful for holidays.
