I'm pretty sure the answer to this is "yes", but we're returning to UK from Australia and have citizinship....
I dont see the value in getting Australian passports before we return to uk ($600+) for family of 4....and assume there is no issue with getting them from London up the Strand if/when we need them..
Immigration website seems to confirm this but just keen to learn from anyone who as actually done this, i.e. got an Aussia passport for first time in uk after stint in Aussie... cheers

As long as you have done the ceremony and have the certificate then i cant see the issue . Just depends what your going to put on the departure card considering you may be leaving on a cancelled PR visa in your brit passport , they may say where is your australian passport .

Somebody with more knowledge would know ,but im assuming your PR will be cancelled out on the computer since you will have australian citizenship , this will get the questioning going .I dont suppose they would prevent you from goiing but welllll ermmmm it dont look good ,does it ? if u get my meaning

Just a quick response...........We are doing the same, not sure if coming back, would like to but family sick in Uk need to go back for. Checked out options of getting aussie passports now on on retunr to Oz and ok to get aussie passport in UK....might be an idea to make sure u on electrol roll here and take that and citizenship docs etc with you on plane (not container) as they are very important and a hassle to get replacements from UK. Oh and make an appointment at embassy when u going to get aussie passport as u dont want to travel to embassey and have to wait all day!!
Hope that helps

Hi we're off to uk at the end of Nov and we haven't got Aussie passports either. As long as you take your certificates with you from the citizenship ceremony you will be ok. If you ever want to return to oz then you must have your Aussie passports.
Also i'm not too sure if this is true or not but a family i know went back to the uk to live from Aust and they were told that they have to come back to Australia within 5 years to keep the citizenship open. Otherwise they have to go through the process again but not too in depth as first time around. I still have to check this out.
One more thing, even though we have dual citizenship now, i had a child last year(jan 08), now i have only got an english passport for him not an australian one, would he be ok to leave Australia with us as he has automatic dual citizenship or do i need to get him an Aussie passport. Cheers

The husband was born here but moved back when he was 5. When he was 18 he applied to AHC for his passport and received it no problem. We later got our daughter's passport from AHC. Don't see why you should have any problems. It's obviously cheaper to get a UK passport in the UK than in Aus, I've no idea if you get clobbered more by getting an Aus passport in the UK than in Aus

If they did not become citizens - there is a time limit.

No my son doesn't have a cert as he's Australian. We had PR at the time when he was born but didn't do the ceremony until a year later then we got our certs then.

Just spoken to Passports and then immigration so I can get some closure on this..
This is certain, if you are an Australian Citizen due dual citizenship:
1. It is "preferred" to exit Australia on an Australian passport but not mandatory, as long as you have valid passport of the country you are going to and have your Australian Citizenship cert to hand.
2. You "must" have an Australian passport to get back in, you cannot get another visa. You can get these overseas
3. You are a citizen for life unless you chose to renounce it. Time limit only applies to PR visas (5 years)
Have spoken to a few people who have done 1 & 2 so I am fairly confident not much more to do in this space...
