Freakin flies!!!!!

Now i know what it is about summer in Oz that p**ses me off
I was just getting fed up waiting for the warmer weather to arrive (as that is one of the main reasons we are here
), anyway today is beautiful, blue skies, sun shinning, perfect really. Decides to take the kids out for a stroll to the park and was followed by a swarm of bloody flies - even managed to snort one up my nostril and it wasnt pleasant
Also caught my 3 year old swatting one and muttering "bloody flies" under her breath (ooops)
There really arent that many months of the year here that I am enjoying anymore - does that tell me something?
Anyway, dont mean to sound like a whinging pom, just sharing another experience

Also caught my 3 year old swatting one and muttering "bloody flies" under her breath (ooops)I can certainly sympathise with you.. I hated the flies. I ended up almost having a phobia about them!!!
I worked with horses whilst I was there and ended up mucking them out wearing one of their fly covers over my head!!! I must have looked so silly but it kept the pesky buggers off my face!!
I swollowed a couple when breathing (as you do) which was awfull, especially as I was coming out of a shopping centre and had to gag and choke in front of hundreds of people!
We did notice a slight reduction along the coast but mainly due to the wind. We took our parents out for lunch one day and wondered why the table next to us sat with their napkins over their food, taking crafty bites of their lunch every now and again. We soon realised when our food arrived, covered with a littering of flies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I turned over the tv the other day to see a (stupid/rubbish) programme called Supernova? they were out in the Aussie desert and the horror of the flies came back to haunt me as I saw how many covered their faces during the filming!!!!
Look out for the ones called sticky flies, they are tiny but hover around your face and will not go away, if they do then its to land on your back with thousands of their other mates!! :scared:

The flies and mozzies plus the summer heat mean for me that I can't wait for winter. I've just spent $600 on a mosquito slayer I'll let you know if its any good, It kills flies too. Problem is its a bit heavy with its gas cylender to strap to your back (the ideal place to put it!)

I remember going to one of the little islands I think it may have been Frazer Island and they have these flying things that land on you and take a huge bite. It really hurts, bloody things are everywhere. Its funny though how when your in the UK you dream of eating outside because thats what people do in hot countries, but never once in your dream does the annoyance of swatting flies coming in.

Yep, I'll go along with that everyone, flies are an absolute pest wth a capital P! I find I just love the winters here, love taking my dog out for a walk but as soon as spring/summer and flies start I find myself staying inside more and more, its just not nice at all. That not whinging either, just a fact. Its not as if they are intelligent either, you would have thought that if someone was swotting their hand at you continuously they would get the message and buggar off somewhere else but they don't do they. They just keeping hanging around your face, all the time annoying you!
It is something that we dream of, sitting outside eating, having a bbq, wine etc but the reality it sooooo different isn't it.
I'd better stop, otherwise I could go on forever!

The flies and mozzies plus the summer heat mean for me that I can't wait for winter.
Dont even get me started on the mossies, i am so badly allergic to them i come out in huge lumps which turn servely red and inflamed when i've been biten, after trying numberous things the dr has finally said to just live with it cos nothing works to stop them or cure them once biten (unless i cover myself with some sort of jungle spray before venturing out).
Apparently the flies are much worse this year because of the weather we've been having, well, thats the excuse my hubbie gave me when i complained about them, said it will get better soon
He will say anything to defend what i dont like about here

A friend of mine has the same sort of reaction and comes up in huge great big marks and had so many at one point that her doctor put her on a course of desensitizing, think it was injection from memory but it doesn't last forever unfortunately. Perhaps ask your doctor about it?
Strange isn't it, I stand by my hubbie, he gets bitten to death and I don't, often wondered why, they must think he is far juicier - which is my opinion too!!

For anyone in Oz there is a good fly deterant called...OFF... in a pump spray bottle.
Its really good stuff, but only used it occasionally, say at a picnic or when playing in the garden ect as it is not that good for you to put on all the time.
You can get it from any good supermarket.......oh sorry they dont do them in OZ do they. Any supermarket then!!

Hardly any flies here South of Brisbane.
Tons of mozzies though.
Lived in fly populated areas in Oz before and couldn't stand it!
Rememebr once going into the outback with some locals for fishing and they bought some cow hear with them. Not for fishing! As soon as we perched near the damn, they threw the cow heart out into the bush. The zillion flies that were on us rushed to the heart and left us alone.
Anyway, I couldn't live in a fly infested area.

Try ODing on the garlic. When I had my horse(s) we used to give them garlic powder in their feed. The theory was when the sweat the flies can smell the garlic and it acts as a deterrent.
Perhaps we think we eat loads of garlic when in fact compared to others it's minimal.
Let me know if it works!!

Oh don't get me started on flies...too late.
I take my dog for a walk on the park opposite us every morning and in the summer the poor chap has only a few minutes because I constantly battle with at leats 3 flies at any one time trying to get in my mouth/hair/nose/ears. After seeing what the flies like to roll around in its not a good idea to let them bath on your skin. The same happens when we take our baby daughter for a walk. I just can't get any Zen with these flies, and this is our third summer - no better.
Aerogard and other repellents are apparently very bad for you. I only spray them on my clothes/hat. I find that wearing dark colours is to be avoided - they seem to love black because it gets nice and warm like a rock. Also they are more attracted to sweat apparently (hard to avoid in 30 degree heat).
It is such a pain in the arse. Many a time I've just given up and spent the day inside rather than try to fight the flies in the summer.
