Finding it hard to socialize
#1

Does any body know of a decent website which can help you make social circles?
I have now decided that this is the time in my life when I can start building a social life again. Kids older, feeling settled and husband being a pot plant (just feed and water him and place near pc!)
Problem that I am finding is meeting new friends. My old friends are in another town and people at work are much older. Many of the Mums my age are at that new baby stage and not wanting to go out, where I am at the been stuck at home far too much and want to get out at every possible convenience. I thought that maybe there are some chat rooms for people who want friendship. I don't want to go somewhere which is a dating forum.
Any suggestions please!

In some localities there are informal clubs that organise cultural excursions - theatre, concerts, exhibitions and so on. There are usually lots of women of a certain age in those groups...

Hi Woody.
Is there a ladies circle near you? They organise fund raisers and have night out etc. They are the female part of the Round table.
I wanted to join them when I moved area but they don't operate in my town.
This is their website.

Are others finding it hard after being away for a period of time?

Hi Woody
Just saw this on the Barbie http://www.facebook.com/ and it looks like it may be good. See what you think.
I think when you get back to the UK...well in Oz theres that commararderie from all being in the same boat and lots of lost souls - you make a real effort to get out and about. Then you get back here and people dont have that "need" to socialise in that way as much (in the coffee -on -the -seafront type of way) because theres probably more going on in their lives. Just - when you've been away a while, you are in the habit more of the Oz way of socialising and it takes a while to readjust I suppose. I turned up uninvited to a get-together at the weekend and really pissed the host off. I assumed it was open house and totally forgot the "need to be invited" rules
I was so embarassed, it really was a final straw for that paticular week!
Im fortunate that Ive gone back to living where a lot of my good, old friends live - but think that if you havent - to work probably helps, and maybe a local pub?
It will get easier as just time broadens your social network - and I bet when you least expect it, like at a bus stop or something, you'll just find you click with someone soon
Love to you

hi woody,
club you may be thinking of is called 'spice'. there are groups across the country and they get up to anything from caving to clay pidgeon shooting to photography.... im not a member at mo, but i have a friend who has joined and reckons its the best decision of his life (also met his partner on there)
hope this helps - i remember how lonely i felt when i returned from a few years away in oz and nz. i remember standing in the shower every morning before going to a job i hated (to clear my debts) and wondering what the point of it all was!!! i dont think people appreciate just how lonely it can be returning to the uk when its an area that you are new to
