Financial Requirements Help!

Hello,
I'm planning on returning to England in January 2015 with my American wife and two kids. We're looking at the financial requirements and we will qualify, hopefully, but I have a couple of questions if anybody knows the answers. I thought I'd try here first before the government!
I'm an author, and get my income from self-published work on Amazon and also from my Publishers in London. Does anyone know if I qualify as Salaried/Non salaried or an I self-employed? I'm hoping I'm Salaried/Non-salaried as then I can also use savings to qualify as I know you can't use saving alongside a self-employed job.
Our second option is to use only savings, but the issue is that we'd have to include my wife's Teaching 403b - which is the American equivalent of retirement. Has anyone else used a retirement as cash savings? The rules say you can, but just wondering if anyone's had any issues with that.
Lastly, on a slightly different topic. Both my kids are British because they're mine and I'm British by birth (only been in USA 10 years), do I have to get their British Passports before we move? Is it easier?
Many thanks for helping me through this minefield that is 'going home'!
Cheers,
Jon

Hi Jon,
Re-your kids. Like you, I plan on moving back to UK after 27yrs in US with 3 kids and US wife. I was told on here that its best to get your kids Brit passports. I already did. You apply in Durham and it was very fast (2wks ish).
As for the financial savings (which is what I plan on doing) as far as I understand the rules it has to be the UK citizen or both and the incomes has to be that of only the Brit. So I doubt you could use your Mrs 403b. But I am not sure. Others that are more in the know will give you better info I am sure.
Cheers
