Feeling sad :(

I'm a few days away from flying away from this area for a quick city jaunt (& more good byes) b4 heading back to UK. Although I do want to go back & will be glad I did, I feel really sad about leaving this little place and the lovely friends I've made - its not nice and I dont like it. Its one of the aspects of migrating that is pants I reckon (if you do decide to head back).
At the moment instead of being excited about heading back, I feel more sad to be leaving. Hope thats not a bad sign and is kind of normal!!!???

Just felt like a mini rant

Re: Feeling sad :(

Hi T

I think what you are going through is completely normal. Like you said in a previous post, it's like leaving a partner ... things haven't been right for a while, you're sure you are doing the right thing, you've got your eye on another bloke (metaphorically speaking of course!) but the actual leaving part is still difficult.

Any major change or move outside of our comfort zone is usually extremely uncomfortable but worth it in the end!

But that's just the intellectualising of it, doesn't make it any better, so sending some hugs and some karma to tide you over as well!

Re: Feeling sad :(

Well I stayed in the USA for 8 months, returning due to really crap company and kids schooling.

Although being a H1b wife I had no real life in contrast to in the Uk I was still kind of sad at leaving, miss a few people and just the moving back is hard so no you are not alone.

Once back you will soon settle again, the freedom I now have is fantastic and apparently summer is on its way!!!!!!!!.

Re: Feeling sad :(

Of course you're going to feel sad about leaving, it's not as if you've hated your life there and you've made some lovely friends. You wouldn't be normal to not be sad. This shows you have a heart and you care.

Just keep focused on what needs to be done and the immediate future. Just remember that you can always move back to Oz if you want to, it's not going anywhere!

Hi T,

I'm sure you're feelings are natural. Even I was very sad when we left and we had only been there 6 months and hadn't really made any friends etc (apart from relatives). I still often feel quite sad about leaving Oz as its a lovely place, but I also find myself smiling when we're out in the nice places in the UK or I'm back with friends and family etc.

I wish you all the best with your move back anyway and keep us posted on how it goes.

Stu :)

Hi

We too are on countdown going back to the UK from NZ on the 6th Aug, exactly 12 months to the day we arrived, No regrets for making the big move, but going back for similar reasons, family, friends and money reasons!! (struggled to get by on a kiwi wage). So we are all excited about getting home and seeing the family.
Good luck with your move

I was desperate to return asap but still felt sad. I remember going for a last swim in the creek and crying..but then realised it was full of mini jellyfish and I was getting stung, so that was a result!
It is the end of part of your lifes journey, and will be sad whether the journey involes say, a new lover or a new home. Once you get here and over jetlag I think you will feel like a kid in a sweetie (lolly) shop!:)

Next August 7 it will be 50 years since we left England for Canada, in those days, never was a question of going back, Canada was to be our home.

Parents Memorial Plate reads:

English by Birth

Canadians By choice.

Sure it was tough, Dad left a good paying job as an Electrician and swept floors, we moved three times the first year here.

Move was for the 8 kids, and it was a great move.

Without meaning to sound confrontational, I was just wondering why, when you are so settled and happy in Canada, you find the need to come on to a moving back to the UK forum to keep telling us all that your parents moved there many moons ago, that you are all happy, wealthy and settled.

I honestly don't mean this question to be in a nasty way - just interested in how you feel you contribute to supporting and advising people who are returning or thinking of returning home - especially as you have never moved back nor would consider moving back

Hi Tanya - you are feeling perfectly normal believe me. Even though I knew I was doing the right thing going home, I still felt sad at the prospect of leaving Oz. There are some beautiful places there and even now I still think of them with fondness - I even have a piccie of the Great Ocean Road on my desktop to remind me what a perfect blue sky looks like

Its hard saying goodbye as it's the end of a chapter in your life. But sometimes you have to finish one chapter to move on to the next, which I'm sure will be full of wonderful new experiences.

Good luck - it will all work out fine for you

Re: Feeling sad :(

These days no matter where you live it's all about compromises.

For me I currently live in the US whereas my Mother, Father, Brother and my Sister and her family all live in the UK. Job wise the US is a fantastic place for me and my wife and on a day to day basis we love it. However, we always feel that for us one of the most important things in life is family and we are missing out on that.

We're planning to move back to the UK at some point, we just don't know when yet. However, I know that when we do it's going to be a compromise too, as I won't be earning the money I am now and the traffic will be a nightmare, cost of living will be higher, etc.

Unfortunately we can't have the best of both worlds and if your making the decision for the right reasons, then you'll be fine. I think that as everyone has said previously this is just the normal twinges you get. Just like your last day on a job before moving to a new one.

Good luck!

I have to say, I don't understand what relevance this has to the op either?

Birdy, feeling sad about leaving is completely normal. I've done it myself. I lived in Hong Kong for 1 short year, though it felt like 5. When the time came to leave, boy was I miserable and kept thinking about what we were giving up. The reality was though, that whilst I was there life was very difficult and there were far more negatives than positives for us. By leaving time, I could only see the good things I would miss and not the bad. Once home, Hong Kong was virtually forgotten, though I did go back for a visit and would love to again. I don't miss living there though.

Ah yes, that gulp/heart in the throat feeling, I know it well.

As others have said, you can get it even when leaving places you know you couldn't or don't want to stay. It's normal and I think is part sheer nervousness about whether you are doing the right thing, but also a sign that you are able to appreciate the good things about where you were.

Just wait until you get back. There will be fond memories of Oz and maybe even some regrets, but I bet you'll soon settle in and be happy.

Congratulations on being normal.

Even though we are about to embark on our venture I do like to look in this forum to remind me of home, we currently live in Spain and although we love it here and the UK where our family and friends are we feel we need to try Australia for our sakes, we dont want any regrets or if onlys'. But I do understand the homesickness people get, I had it the first two years we were here, but was adamant I didnt want to go back, don't ask me why! But I just wanted to wish you well on your return and look forward to the light summer evenings (hopefully warm too) where you can sit outside watching the sun go down even at 9.00pm with a glass of wine, I know I will miss the light evenings after living here. Anyway at least you tried as so have many others, that is what I want to feel, even if we do come back after 6 months!

I'm hoping you're normal Birdy, because I'm going through the same thing. Seven weeks to go, and I'm wandering around with a big old lump in my throat. Every time I go to a favourite shop or place I think, "this will be the last time." Crazy. I've been trying to get home for 25 years, and now I'm sad about it. I keep looking at all the lovely things here (yes there are quite a few) and wondering if I'm mad to give this up. Luckily we're heading into the dog days of summer in the south, so by the time the middle of Sept rolls around, I'll be more than ready to get shot of the place. I hope your move goes well. Just try and relax and enjoy the last few weeks.

For me it's cosmetics. I get orders to take back Bobbi Brown / MAC stuff to my friends at home, and it kills me that their pounds are buying so much more than my dollars. Make up is a lot cheaper here!

Clothes-wise, I'm still a big Hobbs and M&S fan.

Hi all

Thanks for the words everyone & My God, I'm normal, now thats a turn up for the books :) hee hee

It is so funny how you appreciate things all the more once you're off. Even though I'm sure I'll miss aspects of here, think it may be less than I think & a walk in the woods or over fields followed by a pint in a country pub in UK should help & being able to go somewhwere different.
I'm planning trips too - maybe Prague for starters. Soon as I start looking forward to all that I feel better.
I keep singing Knowing me, knowing you by Abba as my theme tune - sad or what!!!!!!!!!

I'm off for a day as a tourist here now to get into practise again :)
Anyway, to anyone else planning the off and feeling funny - good luck
Big thanks
xxxx
