Thought this might be a good place to have a bit of a moan and vent some things.

I have decided Im going back to England and I can't wait. I really have just had enough of here me and family have had really crap luck since being here the list is almost unbelievable. On top of that the family we moved here for (my mums side) are selfish gits! we move all the way over here and they bugger off to the other side of the city, so we hardly see them. Plus we had a massive falling out with them over an issue to do with his wife being in simple terms.. a complete psycho and his mother (who was living with them) couldn't take living with them anymore (due to the wife) so we have now been lumbered with her at our house for the last 5 months and it's making living here really difficult.

Just with everything happening it has really started to get to me over the last few months. Im going back to England , it won't be until May at the earliest tho so still a few more months to go but it seems even harder facing up to those last few months then it has been the years I have been living here. it seems so close yet so far.

Working purely for the money right now to save up to my target ammount to go back thats the only thing keeping me here. If I had the money today I would be off asap.

In general Im just pretty miserable right now. Christmas coming up which I usually tend to look forward to this year I really couldn't care less. The only bright spot on the horizon is the thought that I'll be back home in a little while.

So how long have you been in OZ?

Your story sounds very similar to mine, emigrated to be with family (in-laws), now we never see them at all, fell out big time with MIL, hate her guts. Just want to get away from them.

Hang in there, you will be home in May, not too far away. Just concentrate on that.

Well May really isn't that long at all.

I suggest getting started on all the things you have to do to get ready
- booking removalists
- selling your unwanted items that you don't want to take back
- researching jobs and accomodation in UK
etc etc

If you focus your mind on that you'll find it's May before you know it, and you won't have time to get bored or fed up because you'll be too busy.

If you do find a little bit of time here and there though, use it to enjoy whatever is enjoyable in Melbourne. Would be silly to go back home without having at least experienced the good things that there are there.

Admittedly there's not a lot of fun things to do in Melbourne and it's a pretty shabby dreary place on the whole. You unfortunately chose the worst city in Australia to live in (with the obvious exception of Canberra, but I wouldn't class that as a city really). However there's the Crown Casino. That's worth a day out at least.

There's some pretty good shopping at places lie Chadstone or Southland. Alright you might now want to actually buy much right now but just go for a meal out or a coffee or to watch a movie, window shop and enjoy the atmosphere.

Make the best of Christmas. Have a traditional Christmas dinner, watch some Christmassy movies and of course Lizzies speech, and try to pretend you're in England! It shouldn't be that hard in Melbourne weather.

The time will soon pass!

Well good for you, i was never blessed with a nice MIL, i got the devil in disguise

It's been 6 and a half years now. Went through bouts of homesickness but has never really been as bad as it is now which seems odd considering its prob worse then when we first moved here

The whole family thing has not helped matters. We are no longer on speaking terms with them but if I got into that then it could go on for some time..


Yeah I hope if I can just keep busy the months will hopefully go quickly. Theres not really that much to sort out as Im living with family so no real furniture to take back will prob sell most of what I have. I have already started looking into some good sites about renting in and around London and some job sites to keep an eye on all that. Indeed thats the thing about Melbourne there is not that much to do really once you have covered Crown plus the main shopping places.

I will of course be having the traditional English Christmas as we have every year we been here

We made our final decision to go back to the UK in January, although we had been thinking about it for the 5 years we have been here!

Once we got in to putting the house up for sale, selling a couple of months later and moving in to our rental the time has gone so fast.

Can't believe we have only just under a month to go now before we are off!

The time will go fast for you to May. Enjoy Christmas, start things moving and in no time it will be May.

Hey, cheap shot I actually like Canberra, more so then Syd, Melb and Brissy put together.

I sulk around here because I miss the UK not because I dislike living in Canberra

Ah Nathan, you've got that all dressed up and nowhere to go feeling. Just kicking your heels waiting for the day you get on the plane?
Know how you feel. I've found the best way to get around this limbo time is to treat being here as though it's an extended holiday. Just go and visit places, enjoy the beach and see all the places you haven't yet been to like the Great Barrier Reef maybe? I can vouch for this. It's an amazing place to visit. Go out on a boat on a supervised dive and see the reef, then visit Kuranda and try the sky rail. The Daintree rainforest is the oldest rainforest in the world (it looks like it).
Like you I'm heading home next year but I am using this time to explore so that when I'm sat in my armchair in my cosy cottage back home, I can never kick myself for not making the most of my time here.

Well said - I was going to have a shot at Backagen (hey, thought you were my friend!) that was below the belt! I reckon Canberra is as good a place as any in Australia to live if you have to live here at all. I really dont know why it gets such a bad press except for the bloody news reports which always preface anything bad the government does with "Canberra decided that blah blah blah" and yet if the numpties do anything good it it always "Prime Minister XXX announced a special ..." or "The Government today said XXX"

Hang in there Nathan - May is less than 150 days away and if you get yourself a big red pen and a calendar you can cross them off and see them zipping past. Focus on getting your travel cash all banked up - if you work yourself silly you will be too occupied to worry about all that other cr*p going on with your rellies. Just watch the dollars mount up and maybe if you work really hard you can bring your departure date forwards!

At least you can see the light at the end of your tunnel!

Are you serious backagen? There are tons of things to do in Melbourne, at least as a tourist, though it may be different living there.
