Default Expired UK Visa - do I need it to go on vacation to UK?

My husband (UK Citizen)'s UK Passport has expired. He is also a dual Canadian Citizen, and his Canadian passport is still valid for several years. Does he need to have his UK passport renewed to go on vacation to the UK? Or would he be fine using his Canadian Passport.

Thanks!

I understand that the UK is proposing to have a similar rule to Canada in that a citizen would have to have a valid passport to enter but as far as I know, that’s not the case at present. I have a British friend living in Canada who no longer has a British passport and it’s never caused her an issue.
