I am a British citizen and moved to UAE for 2 years. I moved back to UK about a 6 months ago. I applied to exchange my foreign license for a UK one and they have rejected saying I have been a resident for 5 years in the UK. I thought moving to UAE meant I became a non-resident and thus the 5-year rule does not apply. I what can I do. I got my license in UAE.

I don't know the answer I'm afraid. Both of our children were in similar situations when they came back from the USA and had to take a UK driving test. They were allowed to drive, and insure their cars, using their US driving licence for up to 12 months. I don't know the rules as regards UAE driving licences.

Give the DVLA a call and explain the situation. They’re usually pretty helpful.
