England trip... a couple of cost cutting tips.
If your planning a trip and intend to do a little site seeing/travelling around register with the train web sites. While I was over there I could have got train tickets (Durham to Edinburgh) for £5 each way from GNER... I put off booking it and ended up paying £14 each way 
It was my first visit to Scotland, we had a really nice day out so it was worth it.
Also check out Ebay... I saved a LOT of money doing this. I thought of some stuff I wanted to do before I went over and bid on coupons then had them mailed to my dads house.
We got tickets for Edinburgh Castle on Ebay for £4 each (regular £11)
A family ticket for Hatlepool Maritime cost me £4.50 (regular £20)
I also bought a bunch of Tesco Clubcard coupons... they basically sell for half the face value ie a £20 coupon sells for around £10. I used these all over including restaurants without any questions asked.

Oh and another tip... don't collect/take delivery of your rental car in the dark!!! We had ours delivered in the dark then had issues over a couple of small scratches.

Decline the CDW if you have coverage through your credit card. Folks used to American rental car companies cover everything if you get the CDW -- doesn't work that way overseas. I ended up out-of-pocket $700 (you read right) because someone kindly decided to bash in one wing mirror. In the very-fine-print, the CDW did not cover such an occurrence (car was parked in dodgy area).... but if I'd declined the CDW, AmEx would've taken care of it. I've read other tales of woe from American travellers renting in Europe.
