I'm in the process of shipping my 2 dogs from Qatar to the UK. The quotes I was getting from shipping companies were outrageous and I've found I can do it for a 3rd of the cost myself.
I'd suggest getting an itemised quote from a company and seeing which things you can tick off yourself - that's my plan anyway!

Yes, many have done it for a fraction of that cost. I know of at least two - HappyGlow and MoshiMoshi. Good idea to search for their posts. Others have done it for a lot less, too. CelticSpirit frequently flies her pets, too.

I could really use an answer to this question as well!
My husband and I are moving to the UK this summer with our two small dogs. I have read the Pet Travel Scheme website, but would love the advice of someone who has recently traveled with their pet. Originally I though they could go in the Baggage Area for about $100-$200 but now it looks like they have to go in the Cargo Area (not quite sure how this is different tbh). I'm thinking now it will cost more like $500. Is this about right?
Thanks!

It's very simple - just google for airlines that fly pets in the cabin or as excess baggage, eg Air France, KLM. You can't fly into UK but you can fly to mainland Europe then drive/train/ferry into the UK.
Excess baggage and cargo area is the same thing for the pet, it's just the paperwork and cost that's different afaik.
Good luck!

Yes, I frequently travel with my dogs but generally within the USA. The last time I shipped a dog was from La Guardia to Belfast was 2008. The reason for this was that the little guy did not have to change airports and i could travel with him in cabin as far as New York, which made it only a 6.5 hour trip in the hold. Continental did permit me to handle all the paperwork myself. Of course it was somewhat more complicated before the new DEFRA regulations. Thoroughly worth it though, as it only cost $650.00 :-)
