Default Do ya think i'm.......

Crazy?? (bet you thought I was going to say sexy!! well needed a catchy title)

Anyway, to the point of the thread!

Planning a trip back - hooray, hooray!!! Not quite the move back I often hope for but its a start Thing is my hubbie doesnt have enough hols for a decent trip back so I have suggested that I fly back with the kids :scared: and he follows a couple of weeks later. That way I have enough time to see and do everything I want to do (and boy is there a lot ) then he gets to come over for a couple of weeks and see his folks then we return together (he isnt that fussed about doing much else there anyway!)

So, wanted opinions on wether I could survive a 24 hr trip back on my own with a 3.5yr old and a 1.5 yr old :scared: I am pretty worried at the prospect of it but so desperate to go back I would probably walk it with the two of them strapped to my back

What do ya think??

It will be cool - promise.

I did the same thing 2 years ago due to hubby not having enough holiday.
I found my girls better behaved when they only had one parent to get attention from

Never done it from Oz, but done it from the US a few times with three kids on my own when they were young. As long as you make sure you are well prepared (and what mother isn't, lets face it ), you will be fine. As as the previous poster said, I too found my children very well behaved. It's as if they instinctively know that the time is not good to mess about.

The only problem I found, the first time I flew with the youngest, was he wouldn't sleep on the plane and fought it as much as possible. So the next time I flew I made sure I had some medication with me to keep him calm (I think I had benedryl with me) so he would sleep if he wanted to. I didn't need it but I was glad I had it just incase. I also through out my policy on sweets!

I gave Miss Pants something to help with congestion..arghhhhh can't remember it. It is from Oz though and you can't get it here..arghhhh if I remember what it is will let you know. Anyway it helped and I let her run around like a child possesed when I was in KL Airport that way she was tired for secong leg of flight.!!

So what you're saying is that you don't think your sexy?

Seriously, do it, do something like Aus, Far East, Dubai, UK.

Three steps, no probs, different people around you, you'll be fine (www.emirates.com)

Well Betty Boot, here's what I think..........I’ll be doing that dreaded 24 hour journey on my own this weekend with 2 kids in tow on my own. They are different ages to yours, but they are still children inclined to get bored and fidgety in small spaces.

The thing is, I swore blind I would never do that journey on my own. But, isn’t it funny how thoughts change, now I just view it as something that has to be done in order to get where I want to go. All of a sudden, a 24 hour plane ride with the kids doesn’t seem so bad!! As someone else said, hopefully they will realize with just one parent they have to be on their best behaviour. I can guarantee they’ll want to go to the loo when we’re taxiing to take off etc.

They have got Gameboys that they can play, and we’ve bought them each a new game which they will get later this week. Also, there is the inflight entertainment, which hopefully will distract them for some of the time. My eldest will happily watch a kiddie film, or read a book. They also give out kiddie packs which fill up about 10 minutes at least – or longer if you are lucky. In the past, I’ve wrapped up little presents for the times when behaviour was bordering on the irrational and that quietened them down for all of 5 minutes, then they realized I had a whole stack of little wrapped up presents in my bag, and soon it became “Oh, can we have another present now?” So, I’m not doing that one for this time.

Our flight leaves at 8.30pm, so for the first hour it will all be a ‘novelty’ whilst we push all the buttons, empty the pocket in front, rip the sick bag to bits, play with the earphones, slide the window blind up and down, get up and down to the toilet, kick the chair in front, get under the chair in front etc etc. Then, hopefully they’ll feed us – the food tray always distracts them for about half an hour as they like to mix up all the sachets of salt, sugar and pepper and then mix that with the milk, then we can spend half an hour cleaning up the spillages. They have been known to launch a few plastic missiles too, which invariably land in the face/lap of the passengers infront/ behind us. Then it will be time to sleep for a couple of hours (aided by some cough mixture that has some mild sedative in it!!), before a runaround/battery recharge/toilet stop in Singapore.

Then get back on for a re-run of the above, but this time for 8 –ish hours, then Dubai for 2 hours whilst we try and find the next plane to catch, then another re-run of the above, but this time for 7 hours, and this time when we’re all tired and grumpy…..

By the time we get to Gatwick I’m going to be one frazzled person!!

But what the heck, it’s only for 24 hours – it has a definite END point – it’s not going to last forever, we’ll never see all those people we’ve annoyed ever again, and best of all……………..we’ ll be home for Christmas, so it will all be worth it in the end! That’s the way I look at it anyway!!

I’m not trying to put you off, go for it! Just think about the end bit!!!

Hi,
What a fantastic sumary. My children do that and they are older. The only differencsummaryg the missiles as my two resort to name calling and generaly annoying eachother.
All that said, wish I was going bacgenerallyeekend.
each other UK and have a safe and hopefully peaceful flight.

I did it recently with all 4 of our kids and my wife and about a year ago with just myself and our two eldest (5 and 3) and it was far better than I expected.

We were flying from Perth and both times we stopped for the night in the transit hotel in Singapore airport. Plane left Perth about 4pm and arrived in Singapore at about 9pm - you don't have to collect bags so you can be fairly quickly into the hotel. The kids got a more or less normal sleep and then the plane flew out at about 9am the next morning.

I considered maybe another stop in the Middle East somewhere to shorten each leg - but think in the end I think lengthening the whole journey would have been more of a pain for both the kids and myself. They just hit the jetlag in the one leg with one stop.

Also flew Singapore airlines which has good seat-back entertainment for them - they watched a lot of videos. Air stewards all very helpful.

Thanks for all the advice guys and as was pointed out - there is a definate end point It will either be OK or all go horribly wrong but at the end of the day i really want to go back so even the thought of a journey from hell isnt enough to put me off. At least going back hubby will be with us, if my experience is that bad I may make him take them back on his own

I will definately be taking some medication - may even give the kids some too

sounds so familiar!

Another lone pom woman doing the crusade :scared: with 2 kids next week. Mine are older so we have a mass plan to take sleeping pills Probably as we have aussie passports take the lot before we get to singapore

Of course in the last two weeks the kids have had to come down with every virus on the planet, lost track of the amount of sick bucket and ear infections and temps we have dealt with, but everyones healthy again (please god) and I think this time we may even make it to the plane

Well, the said trip has been done and no plastic missiles were launched into the air! Kids were really good, they got a bit excited the last 2 hours. We landed on a lovely sunny day and not a cloud in sight, 1 degree C.

Great drive home through Sussex/ Hampshire, lots of lovely villages, thatched roofs, streams....oh lovely....drank it all in.

Feels good to be here.....it felt as though I'd come home!!!

Now I'm off to enjoy it, and catch up on shopping and curries and cosy pubs, and country walks!
