Thumbs up Child Benefit

Hello everyone. Not sure if this is the best forum to discuss this. My friend asked me a question and I was stumped!
I said I will ask on here to see if anyone can help answer his question.
He is a British Citizen, lives and works full time in the UK but has 2 children who are resident abroad in Africa with their mother. I seem to recall sometime when we had shortage of nurses, a lot were recruited from the Philippines and they were able to get child benefit for their kids in the Philippines.

The question is - Can he claim child benefit for them?

Thanks for your help.

There's no simple answer. Generally it's the parent with care who would qualify.
Other factors that could make a difference are whether the children live abroad permanently or are they with the mother who is temporarily abroad.
If you and your partner live in different countries you may qualify for Child Benefit or its equivalent in both. The country the child lives in will usually pay the benefit. If the benefit is more in the other country, that country will pay you extra.
That surprised me. https://www.gov.uk/child-benefit-abroad
