What was it about the phrase "The percentage of minorities in mixed marriages is far lower in the US than the UK" that you didn't understand?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interracial_marriage
Despite the UK's having a much lower proportion of non-white population (9%) than the United States, the frequency of mixed marriages is as common.

Surely you can follow citations in a wikipedia article...
US: 25% minorities, 4.9% of population in mixed marriages (2000 census).

UK: 8% minorities, 2% of population in mixed marriages. (Office of National Statistics, 2001 census)

My point was to show that anybody can find statistics to make their particular "side" look more ethnically tolerant - and it's boring. The OP's question didn't singularly address interracial marriage anyway. Sweeping generalizations, anecdotal evidence, and silly questions on an internet forum, do little to shed light on such a complex issue.
I'll say this much ... because the US is more ethnically diverse, we have more opportunities to confront issues (both positive and negative) with race relations. Sometimes we get it right and sometimes we blow it.

I've kind of lost track of what this thread is actually supposed to be about.

What always seems to happen in threads like this is that some overly defensive Brits want to hurry up and point out that the US has a much worse history than the UK and therefore Americans must be overwhelmingly more racist. What always fails to get mentioned is the historical incidences of amazing efforts to overcome racism, put forth by the very same population of people, which has consistently happened simultaneously to the shameful stuff.

If you ask me, the OP seemed to want to make some sort of incendiary statement about British people being a bunch of racists. My limited (and incidentally anecdotal) experience with Brits suggests that this is not the case.

OP seems to be specifically interested in race, but then also 'directness'.
