Exporting your problem, quickly solves the problem and eastern Europe has excelled at this.
By the way, most Rumanians that emigrate usually head for western Europe in general and not particuarly the UK.

I wonder if that's because of where in Detroit you live?
A problem with using our immigrant experiences as comparisons is that we often move from muddling along in the middle of a place in the UK to living in a more select area of our new country. After all, not many people are going to move from a rough area in Manchester to a rough area in Toronto, Los Angeles, or Detroit. Detroit has a lot of suburbs to whiche anyone who can afford it has fled. The stats there are not the ones quoted.
On the other hand, we can easily just drift along in life in the place we call home and end up in a dubious area and not be that bothered because we understand it, know a lot of people etc. Been there, done that. So, our new place is so much better. But it's not a fair comparison.
Not saying this is your situation, Manc. But it's possible.

It really frustrates the hell out of me to constantly see in the media comments about how the government should, will, or is getting 'tough' on crime, sometimes accompanied by half-baked 'schemes' that some 'expert' thought might help, and yet the government (and I'm referring to the Australian government here almost as much as the British government) consistently fails to do the things that any ordinary person knows would cut crime very quickly and effectively.
1. There must be a well-organised and well-equipped, highly motivated police force that is not too bogged down in paperwork and red tape, and is not afraid to do anything for fear they will end up in more trouble than the criminals.
2. When caught, the offenders must face actual genuine serious consequences for their actions. This does not always have to mean imprisonment (which is ludicrously expensive and it's us who pay for it) but there should also be other options available to judges which are really effective in deterring and punishing offenders. I'd bring back some form of judicial corporal punishment for a lot of crimes. It's fast, inexpensive, totally enforcable, hurts the offender and makes the victim and the wider community feel that justice has been done.
Why can't governments see that the best solutions to many problems are often the simplest, cheapest, and most obvious ones?
