Good point. I was having a flashback moment of a trip out west but it wasn't my intension to compare it to any place in the UK. But your stats are a reminder of the massive size of America.

It really depends what people are used to. When people in the UK talk about a place being remote, it's probably based on the fact that there is no direct public transport available, or the next bigger supermarket is a 20 min drive away. Then you also have the smaller islands, or places like the Highlands that can feel remote. Maybe because I never use public transport and enjoy driving, I wouldn't consider Cornwall remote. It could also mean that people consider London the centre of everything, so the further away from London the more remote you are.

Effort of travel can also come into the "remote" equation in the UK, so expanding on the point about public transport. Small Towns can have traffic that resembles cities in the USA at times, with busy feeder A & B roads around them as well, often single carriageways as well. So living only 10 miles away from a Town Centre can be a 60 minute journey some days. I can travel the 45 miles to work every day in less time than I could drive from East to West Swindon at rush hour. So living 20 miles away from a Town (which is an effort to achieve) can feel very remote, just not in the sense of having square miles of land around you and not seeing the orange glow of street lighting.

Nearest neighbour 10 miles away? How about a 270km flight just to buy bread and milk?

Australia is the complete opposite example of space vs population compared to the UK. I think there is about 25 million in population yet the landmass is nearly 8 million square km. Normally that would work in favor for those that want to be land owners but Australia is a little different because so much of the land is uninhabitable and the remaining land is extremely expensive from what my friends say. I've never been there but some of my associates have. Would you agree with their opinion?

Another of the many pointless best places to live surveys. This time from bankers and the Isle of Man made it though https://www.express.co.uk/travel/art...uk-news-latest
Could be considered remote but then again if you don't mind flying and have cash, you can be in Dublin, Liverpool or Manchester in less than 50mins

That is a interesting survey and a reminder of the several places that can work as a home base. Are you looking at one of those places for a potential move?

The wife and I have been considering buying land somewhere in the UK as a investment for the family. It can be a good idea to buy parcels of land but especially in a country with limited space. Puts a premium on the investment.

Not looking myself and quite enjoy the work life balance in Ireland to be honest. We have good work opportunities here, housing was/is affordable and just have more space in general + earning € and being in the EU gives us a bit more security paying mortgage in Spain. Plan one day is maybe to spend some of the winter in Spain when we no longer have to work, but that's very far away:-). If it was the UK, I can understand why Isle of Man and places around Cornwall would be high on peoples list. Downside with Isle of Man is the size and although larger and cheaper than Jersey (lived there), the wife would not cope on a smaller island. Cornwall has great coastline and walks but downside is employment if you are looking for IT jobs, or let's say better paid work.

Ireland is beautiful and I agree it does offer a very good balance to life and some very scenic and peaceful places there. Do you feel Dublin is the only place for tourist to let their hair down in Ireland, or is there a second major Irish city
with just as much nightlife as Dublin and comparable to a major city in the UK?

Cool home in Wokingham
The bank of England announced today that if the UK decides to go the route of a Hard Brexit the pound might lose about 10% of it's value. The end of the year could definitely be the time to exchange dollars for pounds.

Do anyone have experience visiting Portsmouth and Portchester?

Seem like a real possible option in terms of the homes options, and being near the ocean is a major plus.

It's very hard to compare and while Dublin is the capital, you will find many other places where tourists let their hair down. What most people notice is that cities are very small here, However, they have a lot more going on than cities maybe twice or three times the size in UK. Galway is probably the most visited City after Dublin and it's all about music, culture, sports, arts, pubs and food here. You can walk shop street in summer and will see people out on the streets performing. You could be sitting out drinking a coffee and 5 minutes later there is a concert in front of you. You might not find the best shopping but things like the Galway Arts Festival are what people seek here which is just happening now:

Oh good! Your economy is going to be trashed even more than it already has been by impending Brexit and I will be able to take full advantage - Yippee!. Don't you think that that sentiment might be in rather poor taste for those already here and I note the property porn 'embargo' didn't last long. Is this for real?

Isn't this utter waste of time - it's been turned into a typical internet chat room with as much objectivity - take it outside worthy now? BE members have been 'here' before enough times where they tried hard to provide meaningful information but at the end of the day there was really absolutely no purpose - sile, beccarose, downtongabby anybody? The OP has been told as much, many times.

Even Location Location Location has no purpose if you really don't know what life in the UK is like so that you can start to separate the wheat from the chaff.

And all this while the UK is going through the greatest political upheaval in living memory/post WW2. So much so that some commentators suggest post all of this will render the UK at large virtually unrecognisable, if indeed there is a UK. This alone makes it likely fruitless, at this particular time.

We will make sure to include a trip to Galway while visiting Ireland. I'm sure the kids are going to love it to bits .Very good tip thanks for that. Three more weeks and we're heading over. One month is probably going to feel like two weeks.

More property porn for you:-). When it comes to property, London obviously has so much more quality and choice for the high net worth individual and you just can't compare London with any other capital. Since Brexit, many banks have and will be moving from London to Dublin. There is one small advantage for the super wealthy banker who wants a view. While London might have more going on, better public transport etc. you certainly wouldn't get that view in London https://www.daft.ie/dublin/houses-fo...ublin-1898312/
