Hi Sundarize, good to hear youre enjoying being back. We were in Adelaide too before Perth so know where youre coming from. Whereabouts in the hills were you? No doubt we shared the same expat friends! Did you go to any of the poms picnics in Belair??

Keep smiling! :)

We went to one of the meets in Belair but couldnt work out who was in and who wasnt - bit clickish??!

We had a property at Crafers West - backed onto Belair National Park.

We had 11 acres, a dam etc. Brownhill Creek ran through the property, but so did ;

brown snakes
Red back spiders
white tail spiders
cockroaches
scorpions
centipedes
kangaroos
koalas
millipedes

We may have met! The first picnic was in October when we first arrived so that was interesting putting names to faces from the Adelaidebrits site. The other one we went to in December was when we decided to move to Perth so we were saying our goodbyes to those we had met before.

Know what you mean though about it being clicky. Bit like that on the site (Adelaidebrits), dont say one bad word about the place or you will be sent to coventry!! Prefer Coventry to Adelaide any day.

Good luck with settling back in. Takes a few weeks for the grin to subside to a knowing smile :D ---- :)

snappy May 21st 2004 9:22 pm

Clicky?? don't say a bad word about Adelaide??

Can I just ask you two - are you actually talking about the same Adelaidebrits that I know and love?

I know who one of your are and I also know when ever you have posted anything on there you have always had everyone's support. No one slated you for moving back to the UK as everyone knows all to well that Adelaide or Australia in general isn't for everyone so we all in fact say that the people who move back to the UK are in fact making a braver move as they are doing what is right for them.

Did you make any effort at these picnics to speak to anyone? I can not for a second think that all the main people on Adelaidebrits wouldn't have said a word to you when you went to a get together unless you sat in a corner and didn't utter a word.

As for saying a bad word about Adelaide everytime someone posts a negative about the place every single post in return thanks that person as it gives us all a better understanding of what real life is like out in Adelaide and that is what the site is about getting real experiences of what general every day life is about whilst living in Adelaide including the good and the bad points.

The Adelaidebrits site has helped loads of people who have moved or are about to move out to Adelaide so there is no need to slate it even if Adelaide wasn't for you that is such a load crap that you have posted about the site.

I'm glad you both are happy back in England and I do hope things work out for you. I'm am only sorry that Adelaide didn't appeal to you but please don't bitch about the people on the site as they are decent people and would try to help anyone who needs it.

Kick arse Snappy, :scared: any one who wants to live on 11 acres in the Adelaide hills obviously dos,nt want neighbours, or the company of their fellow humans ????............:D  MM

snappy May 21st 2004 10:21 pm

Too right MM LOL

It annoys me when people slate a really good site full of helpful people who give honest opinions especially when it turns out they have only ever posted 12 posts and 4 of them being on one thread about them going home. This is also where everyone support their points of view and showed them respect for making a decision! AND no one mentioned Coventry so what the *?!* is that all about?

Sasha :)

angelica May 21st 2004 11:07 pm

I wasnt bitching about the people on the site, more the ethos of it which has been the same since it was on the yahoo site. Ie you can come on the site if you want to say something good about Adelaide especially if it includes sun, beaches & happy smiling shop assistants but as soon as you dare to mention job scarcity, manufacturing leaving the city in droves, employers not wanting to employ non aussies, even non SAers, state government having a hidden agenda about needing more migrants etc etc you are made out to be too negative!!

Dont take it so personally Snappy!! Just open your eyes a little & listen to both sides before you start mouthing off. Stay happy :)

They are just ignorant Dotty. Cant help but feel sorry for them as they think its going to be as good as their new buddies make out. Truth is a lot of them are running away from something & so have to make it work out there.

I have never spoken to anyone on the Adelaidebrits site that have just said how wonderful the place is, all of them give honest opinions and that includes the BAD points about the place. I suggest you have another look at the site and then try typing the facts rather than the rubbish that seems to have overcome you.

A post recently including the fact that one of the main manufacturing companies are pulling out of Adelaide so it IS mentioned. Other couples who have found it hard as some Aussies won't employ them due to the fact their qualifications aren't recognised out in oz no matter what the assessment agencies say have also put up posts on this matter. Other couples who just find it isn't for them have also put up posts as to why it wasn't suitable for them - all these posts help people who are moving out to Adelaide get more of the real picture.

I have listened to both sides and I can see why you moved back from oz as it wasn't for you but like MM said are the 1 million odd people in Adelaide just living in a dream world???? Show a bit of respect and realise that just as it didn't work out for you it doesn't suit everyone some people love it and others hate it .... that's life and that's what makes us all so different.

There's no need for you to put down such a great site that is full of information and support.

Well what did you expect on land backing on to a national park ?
Taj Mahal maybe,
Hanging gardens of Babylon perhaps?
Or herds of Wilderbeast sweeping majestically across the plain.

Course I checked it out!! Like here its addictive, even though neither forums are relevant to me anymore: Im not in or intending to go to Adelaide & Im not returning to UK, just a bored woman looking for a distraction from my kids while my husband spends the day go karting with his mates!!

Time to get the wine poured methinks!!

sundarize May 23rd 2004 7:39 pm

Wow - never expected the Spanish Inquisition.

Wish I'd not posted my message in the 1st place.

One of the nicest things about going to OZ and returning is that I am far more content and have learned some valuable life-lessons. If you look back over my early posts, I too was angry with Britain and dismissive of those who thought it wa better here than Australia. But, having now got the high ground that experience brings, I can be more laid back.

Adelaide, to me is just about the best city in the world to live, in terms of physical attributes. The balance and layout of CBD, ringed by parks, ringed by suburbs, ringed by hills is superb. Colonel Light certainly did have a vision! (live there and you'll understand the pun).

But it wasn't for us, for a number of good and personal reasons. If anyone is genuinely interested, I am happy to tell and discuss these, when I get time.

A word on the Brits picnic in Belair National Park which seems to have sparked the on-line fight, above. We only went once just to see, in November time, I think. Yes we could have made more of an effort, but you have to imagine the scene. There were probably 100 people in small groups of 3 0r 4 having picnics, like in any park. It was not clear who was Brits and who was not (it wan't a private party). Short of asking at each table / blanket "I'm a Pom - will you be my friend?" there was no way of "integrating"

Thats what I meant by clickish. We met up with our friends (Mashiraz and family) for a BBQ intstead.

Clubs are clubs with the usual presence of bitching, backbiting and slaggin-off sessions (as this thread aptly demostrates) so we were'nt too interested in going again.

I am more disappointed in the barrage of abuse traded in this, my thread, than before and I have decided to "POST NO MORE"

Good luck to all of you wanting a new life. Good luck to all of you re-discovering your former life.

Hi Sundarize
I'll echo that.
Some of us do want to hear both sides of things.

You carry on posting

First of all, Sundarize dont go. Its me that poked the wasps nest so if anyone has to go it will be me. Its given me the excuse to go cold turkey on the site anyway!

I would also like to point out that I wasnt personal about anyone on the other site, in fact there are many lovely, genuine people who post on it who have been very supportive . Likewise I have tried to be as helpful as I can too. There may be one or two who are manipulative & dont like it when things dont go there own way but each to their own.

I want to point out too that Snappy doesnt know me as she stated; she may have replied to one of my posts but she has never met me. Same with PP, who I noticed was the first person to mention my name. Thanks PP.

So there you go. At least it gave you all something to talk about for a couple of days. No hard feelings to any of you I have met, I wasnt directing my opinions at you.

Don't anyone goooooooooooooooooooo...hey we don't all have to see eye to eye ok. We would be like this perhaps if we all sat around a table and chatted.

I hope no-one was pointed out OK..what I meant was we are all happy to hear what others have to say..well we should be and even if we don't agree does it matter.!! we all have such different experiences, backgrouds etc...what I don't like are personal attacks and I'm sure a few of us can relate to that but come on please don't anyone go......Angelica don't go...stay and post like we all do.!!Sundarize too......just try again eh !!

I don't think you should stop posting if you feel you have something to say.
It is too easy for the internet to give people the chance to 'have a go' at others.
On all sites there seem to be 'cliques' of people and this is probably because they post so often they feel they 'know' each other.
We can all be guilty of this.
I dislike the kind of intersite rivalry that sometimes happens and have posted so on other sites.
Carry on as I am sure you can be of help to many of us.

Best wishes

Sad thing about this forum is there are people who hang out just to stir things up. Usually people who cant or wont move back to the UK but probably deep down would like to so they have to direct foul or abusive posts at others. I should apologise to you as I also was one of those who tempts trolls by posting here. The one in this attack has written almost identical posts to me before so how he can deny it was him is just stupid.

Thats the trouble tho, letting trolls win, if I post in anyones thread its likely a troll will pop up, but hell no I wont stop posting because there are many good people on here who are a great bunch.

Keep posting, nobody should be bullied in real life or cyber life :D

Edit was for writing great funch! instead of great bunch:)

That would be nice.
We are going to validate and I have a few people to meet in NSW to discuss work.
We will also be going to Adelaide where our son lives but he works abroad a lot so we need to time things for when he will be there.
He will be in the UK next week so we will then finalise our plans.
I will send you a PM when I have some definite dates if that's OK

I don't want to see anyone leave this site as I do believe that people who have gone through the experience and either have stayed as they loved it or left as it wasn't for them have something to offer people who are thinking about making such a huge move in their lives.

What annoyed me was the attack on a good website that has helped and supported people and NOT due to expressing why you have decided to go home as only you can know yourself what is right for you.

Angelica - I know I have never met you and that isn't what I said, I just said I know who one of you are. I also know that when you posted on Adelaidebrits everyone showed you respect and appreciated your post being so honest so I did not understand your post

Know what you mean though about it being clicky. Bit like that on the site (Adelaidebrits), dont say one bad word about the place or you will be sent to coventry!! Prefer Coventry to Adelaide any day
this is what annoyed me but it certainly doesnt mean that you have to leave any site as I'm sure you do have a wealth of information to offer people myself being one of them.

So I do genuinely hope you both do carry on posting as I do think it is important that people hear the good and the bad points as then they can go out with a more realistic attitude.

I do wish you both well for the future and I hope that everything works out for you, I am not the kind of person to post just to stir up trouble - I just wanted to defend what I find to be a fantastic site, no hard feelings intended.

Sasha
