Back 20 months

Hi everyone

Have'nt been on here very much over the past few months, but just thought i would give you an up-date on where we are at at the moment.

I must be honest after the 10yrs in Alberta it was a scary thought of moving back over the pond, although Alberta never felt like home. We had a fantastic home over there which really held my heart,as it was our dream home and i knew we could never afford the same back here in the lake district. We have rented since we came back as we had'nt sold our home over there until yesterday :amen: Before we sold it was a bit unsettling because when the going got tough we could just say "lets go back" (but there was a reason why we came back to the UK in the first place). So now we can put our roots down where our hearts really are,and that is the wonderful UK.

It was a difficult 12 months for our teenager, but after a change of schools he has settled down well.

I love being able to go out walking in the peek district all year round. In AB we were looking out of the window for 6 months of the year :( (hated that). We have also had so many lovely holidays since we came back and generally life is good. The UK for us has a true sense of HOME....some thing we never had while living in Canada. We are so glad we did it and tried some where new,but the UK has many qualities and beautiful places to visit, and the English and second to none. So glad to call this HOME again
Now we can buy a house and settle down once and for all

Hi Cumbrian Lass,

I'm glad you are all settling well in England :)
Can I ask, your house in Alberta, you only just sold it? Did you sell it empty or leave some furniture in it?
We have our house on the market but houses are just not selling here at the moment. We may have to leave it to sell when we're gone but are really stressed about that prospect.
My hubby still hasn't got a contract for the job in London yet and if we don't sell the house too we are totally screwed with getting a house in England. He is meant to hand in his notice here next week but can't do that if he has no contract.
Am hoping everything will fall into place very soon. We have until end June and then we're off!

Not in UK yet but will be in next few months. I have a lease on apartment so have to wait for that, also want to save wee bit more money. When I visit this time I'll be there for 3-4 months. I have plenty of people I can stay with. So glad things worked out well for you..Part of the time I'll be in the Preston area but most of my time will be in Scotland.

Yes I am very excited but have to hold my horses a wee while longer. I will have to suffer in Arizona for a few more months. I want to get myself in financial position so that have enough money to stay in UK for that long, pay pet sitter fees for my dog for 3-4 months, enough money to pay dratted student loans so i will likely not go until Spring of next year. But that is fine as I can't believe it is four months since my brother died. Also reading WhoFan updates it is making me homesick and determined that nothing will get in my way and that I will take this trip. Looking at going around early March timeframe which really is not that far away. Miss Betty has been counting down for ages and she is nearly home!

Cumbrian Lass, I am so pleased to hear that things are going well for you and your family and that you have sold your house in Ab. We have been back since August and I can honestly say that I seldom think of my life in Alberta.

On a very important note, I hope you found a hairdresser. I did and she got the colour right, which is a relief. How shallow am I?

Yeah isnt it funny how life changes ?
I hardly think of Alberta either .......i really found it very boring,so maybe that is why and maybe its why i have forgotten so much . Ten years has gone so fast, and i can barely remember any of it . But yet i can remember every thing in the UK before we went .......a bit odd really
I did find a hairdresser thank goodness lol

Can I ask if there are any tax implications with not being resident in Canada when your house sold?
We plan to return to UK next summer and had an agent round just last night who said the last thing we would want would be for the house to sell when we are back in UK due to capital gains tax?

There's a withholding tax I believe - of 25% of the value. Once you have filed your final tax return, the balance is released to you. Or something very close to that - try a search on here - there are old threads about this (probably about two or three years ago.... :)

actually, here is one thread ....http://britishexpats.com/forum/showt...&highlight=tax

edit: here's another ...http://britishexpats.com/forum/showt...&highlight=tax

I think CRA is your friend.... sort of!

I couldn't handle that at all. Here in Australia it's bad enough, with around three months being "looking out of window" time, when it turns into a blast furnace and it's too hot to go out, but you can still go out in the evening.

Here is a copy of a post I made, in another thread, on this subject. Hope this helps.

I can't speak for Signapore, but the professional advice that I have been given, from a Canada/UK perspective is:

If I sell my principal residence before leaving Canada there is no CGT payable.

If I don't sell before I leave I need to get a written market evaluation, probably from a realtor, on the day I leave Canada. If my principal residence is then deemed to be in the UK, after the date of leaving Canada, then I will be subject to CGT on the any increase in value following the date I left at the date of sale.. I will not pay CGT on the increase in value from the original date of purchase to date of leaving.

I also have to file a form with the Canadian Revenue Agency.

Hope this makes sense, even though it is not specific to Signapore. Are principal residences exempt from CGT in Signapore?

Hi there
We rented it out for over a year,so the family had their own furniture and we shipped ours back to the UK. Things are going through on it now....fingers crossed. Good luck with you guys X We moved before we sold as our son was 13yrs old and we thought if we left it any longer ,we would not be able to move back as he was going into high school .Thankfully it has worked out,but it was a stressful time thinking ......have we done the right thing, and i know we have

Lovely update and so happy for you that your house has finally sold - what a relief!

I know exactly what you mean about being yourself again - I'm certainly not the happy, bubbly, out going, sociable person I was 5 years ago before I came here but I'm hoping the old me will come back again once I am home! The last time I went out here was October but in the next 7 months back in the UK I have one concert, one holiday, a 4 week course, 3 overseas trips, a music festival, a school get together and a fair number of lunch/dinner dates all planned and I've not even left here yet lol!

I'm so tired of being here, only 7 shifts left and 17 days to go and I am DONE!!! Hurrah!!!!

You will soon be back to your old self again ,although it took me a few times of going out with my mates,as i felt like an outsider. I was once the bubbly centre of attention girl too .............and i felt like i was not" living" so to speak in Canada , and I was stagnant as i thought was the place we lived.Once i felt i belonged here again,i felt like i was HOME and a huge burden had lifted and i was ME AGAIN !!!! "I am Me again"

How resonant is this. I have been away over three decades and hope that who I used to be is not completely lost.
........and I am also going to settle in Kendal!

There is a lovely Cumbrian man-'Tony' who has been taking daily photo's of Cumbria every single day for years. I have his pictures as a Homepage. It is so lovely to see seasons again!
I so look forward to being IN what I am currently seeing online!

Re: Back 20 months

Hello Cumbrian Lass, thanks for the picture!

Bliss isn't it? I enlarged it, and love the snowy whiteness of the swans downy coat.

I've been reading some sobering views on UK life, and as others have said, I balance them against the positive views. I much prefer to get both sides of the equation.

One of the things that is becoming so glaringly apparent for me is the need for so many of us to try for 'greener pastures'. That results for so very very many, in discovering that those greener pastures are just as tarnished as those we left.

I have found Australia to have some of the most blatant corruption that I have ever seen; I am stunned by it and cannot understand why there is no public outcry. I call it 'soft corruption' because it isn't hidden, and seems to be accepted as part of everyday life.
BUT:

I have heard that said by those in Canada and the US, and of course it is being said about Britain.

I have decided that this is not area; it's era; it's everywhere, and is driven by the 'greed is good' principle, and the self absorption bred by this kind of system.

Whilst no recluse, I am returning home for the countryside, for lower temperatures (yes it's getting hotter, but our summer temperatures now in Aus are regularly over 40 degrees).
During the drought a couple of years ago-when it first rained people stood looking at it; it was a phenomenon! I love rain, and know Cumbria has the highest rainfall in the UK apparently.
I will welcome the rising damp, even if it's up my darn body!

I have a scathing contempt for our over indulgent politicians here, and have little doubt it will be the same in Britain, with callous Conservative's and a Labour movement that long since deserved its voter base.

I have no illusions is what I'm saying, but would prefer to be home where I'm 'at home', and to see hedgerows, bluebells in the woods, drizzles/mist etc.,

The point is that no terrible 'illegal'/drug addict/'dole cheat'/political parasites can take that away. It's there, and will always be there until some cretin decides to press that switch and we are all blown clear out of our undies.

For a number of reasons I have learned to stretch a buck, so do not fear a lower budget-if that proves to be the case.

It does no good to see any one place as an absolute solution-particularly nowadays. This running after an ideal has led so many people to go back and forth to Aus-I'm damned if I can see how they afford it!

I am a cynical pragmatical skeptic. Any good things that happen therefore are a wonderful surprise!!

127 days to go. And counting.

You like rain and damp ? You will be fine welcome home
