We had one of those at the lake on Sunday. A woman with twin sons, not quite 2 was hovering around them constantly....seems she was afraid they were going to fall into the lake and drown. Its annoying as hell....

It varies. There appears to be no vetting of parents who volunteer at school or go on school trips, sleepovers/trips away with parents one has never or very briefly met are considered normal.

I find a lot of US moms can be a tad pushy, they seem to assume you have no parenting skills unless you do it all their way.
same here - id probably tell my kids to be careful but unless they were doing somethig crazy I would probably have left it until other kids arrived. Mind you - knowing my 2 year old it would not have been a twig - it would have been a bloody great big stick and would have been battering his elder brother with it so it would have been fairly moot anyway!! (there is a reason my fridge has a pile of toy guns, lightsabres and swords on it!).

It's weird. Around here Ikea, Fiesta or WalMart seem like they would be a pedophiles dream come true. Those kids are completely unsupervised. I almost squished a toddler with my grocery cart in Fiesta the other day and I never could figure out who the hell it belonged to.

I know we have to have background checks done if we want to volunteer for school functions/field trips.

If you're an expat but your child is an American citizen, does that mean you're an American parent? Ponder... muse...

That's interesting, no doubt it varies by school district.

I need to point a stern finger at nooj. Absolutely nothing wrong with Gucci sunglasses or their knockoffs. I own a pair of knockoffs

American kids in general seem to me to be more indulged compared to british kids. I guess this is connected to it maybe?
I see it with the kids in my family over here. They always seem to be the focus of all the adults attention and all activities revolve around them.
I think this is why Americans generally grow up to be so super-confident and ready to take on anything. They are brought up to believe they are the centre of the universe.
A bit of a generalisation I know but that's what i think. I'm not knocking the way kids are treated here, just saying it's different and therefore seems a bit weird to us expats.

We're probably all more protective than our own parents were, also there was none of the academic 'helicoptering' in my day, my parents had no clue what school work I was doing.
