I just want to say this.
You nearly always talk about your green card every time you post.
So about that card - you can be out of the country for a year without too much bother going back in. Just walk back in.
I notice you filed US taxes. So that's good and helps maintain your residency.
Here's the part I want to comment on. I think you are setting yourself up for failure in the UK by worrying about the US green card. You took a chance and didn't get your US citizenship before you left. So you have a mental sword of Damocles hanging over your head. I imagine that you are constantly thinking you have to get back to the US before 6-12 months runs out.
You came back to the UK during the gloomiest time of year. It's been a horrible winter there. It's hard to get re-started in a new country, let alone going back during the dregs of winter. It's just as hard to get work in the US as it is in the UK.
Here's the best immigration information I have for you. So what if you end up abandoning your US green card? It's a hell of a lot easier to move back to the US (immigration wise) than it is to the UK. From what you have told us, if you leave the UK, you and your wife will never qualify for a return back to the UK under the new financial rules.
Stay in the UK and tough it out. Give it more time. You can always file for a new green card later on if things really don't work out.

If challenged do not say "I changed my mind about where to live". You can truthfully say "I was undecided about where to live with my wife and now I have decided - it's the good old USA".

Goodness, you only moved back to the UK in October 2012, after selling up in the US, applying and paying for a UK spouse visa together with all the other expenses of moving.
Have things gone that badly in the UK that you are thinking of returning to the US so soon?

Things have not been that easy and plans don't always work out
You can only give it your best shot and if it is not working you have to decied what's best for you and those you love.
It's hard to loose money but that's life maybe like everyone has said I should have got my citzenship but I did not.
I thank everyone for there input

yes your right rebeccajo but it's not just about me it's also about my wife.
She also has found it hard and maybe we have not given it enough time but I would hate for her to be one side of the atlantic and me the other.
Not that I can say that will happen but any way thanks again for your input
