Default 6 months Uk/6 months NZ (or anywhere else)

Has anybody (below retirement age) done the 6 months living in UK and 6 months elsewhere?

This something I am contemplating starting next year. I work in IT so should be able to get contract work in both places.

Any words of wisdom from anybody who has done this?

Make sure you have plenty of money! I kept a house in the US and an apt in the Caymans for almost three years - expensive way to live..

We thought about that but it seems that most countries make you stay 6 months and 1 day to retain tax residents so although an ideal life and I would love it, it is not necessary practical due to the residency problems with paying tax

Internal tax laws are complicated enough, international tax laws even more so. If tax is a consideration between the decision to spend six months in the UK and six momths in NZ then an accountant with expertise is a must.

There are countries where income from abroad is none taxable and countries where, depending on your status, you have to report your income wherever it is earned.

I'm currently researching the two country possibility, but, as orangepants said, it's not a cheap option.

Hi,

We haven't gone down this route as we are leaving for other reasons, but husband is also in IT and contracting in the UK for his NZ employer. That way he can come back if he needs/wants to.

Good luck

Carole
