Here is a link posted in the Canadian forum. The information provided implies that contributions made in Canada will count towards contributions in the UK and vice versa. Maybe there is a similar arrangement with other countries. I am not sure of the ramifications of all of this but it looks like an attempt to stop people double-dipping.

Hopefully all will be revealed in the fullness of time as some of us are due to make significant class 3 contributions by this April 5th.

I would hate to think that those contributions would be to no avail.

It is, but then some of us paid for it with 11% deducted from our salaries towards funding it.

But won't you get all that back within the first few years, and then all the rest will be icing on the cake?

I reckon I got all my contributions back with the tax free lump sum, to be honest. The rest icing on the cake, no, it was part of my salary package so I consider I earned it. Doesn't mean I don't consider myself to be in a fortunate position, because I do. But one I paid for with either cash or labour, and one of the reasons for being in The Job.

I am not sure, but I believe this only refers to social security benefits, not pension benefits.

Here is an update from the Daily Telegraph. It looks now like there will be some qualifying criteria:
