Where is the Interview
I'm going to apply for a job in Ras Laffan, Qatar, one which I think I can get, as its a good fit for my skills and experience.
The only query I have is where would the interview be. Do you generally have to travel to the country in question, if you are in the shortlist, for the interview, or is there generally an interview by a company HR rep in the UK.
The reason I ask, is that I don't have time to do the travelling, which could take a couple of days I guess, what with flights and accomodation.
Thanks in advance. ;8-)

Re: Where is the Interview
would have thought it would depend on the company, so ask them?
might have an initial interview over the phone and then be invited over for a face to face if you make the short list.

Re: Where is the Interview
You have to be interviewed. Would you accept a candidate from Dubai without interviewing.
Don't forget that in the ME the weekend is different which would mitigate the travel time. Leave Friday night or Saturday from UK, be interviewed on Sunday and return overnight and go to work.
You won't get a job unless you are interested enough to apply for it completely.

2 days will most likely be enough....and if you get the job, everything you were so busy with before is more or less irrelevant anyway...cause you're moving away from it...

Re: Where is the Interview
Just bear in mind that Ras Laffen is a petrochemical shit hole on the far end of the peninsular, miles from Doha and therefore miles from western civilisation...you may want to travel there for an interview before committing yourself...the only place worse in the Middle East is arguably Yanbu, Saudi Arabia (which The Dean will tell me is paradise on earth, no doubt...but I have been there and Ras Laffan many times...both truly horrible).

Yanbu - I just can't believe that place - it is unlovely, unfulfilling, crappy, miles from a 'sensible' airport, pointless, toxic, difficult, unserviced and just annoying.
Other than that not bad.
Or do I have the wrong Yanbu?

Re: Where is the Interview
Hi,
Thanks for the info. I think I would really need to be sure I was wanting to work there, before I applied.
Seems some distance to go for an interview, although I can see what yous are saying. Who is going to employ somebody without some face time. Just a pity it couldn't be done over video conference.
I had a look at pictures of Ras Laffan sites and it doesn't seem to be that inviting, although the money is good (for a day rate anyway). It looks like one these industrial cities. I would assume, there would be decent offices with air conditioning.
Bob.

Creep,
Don't forget that the company would fund the interview trip so there would be no cost.

Re: Where is the Interview
Hi Dago,
So you reckon the company would fund my travel across. That would be cool. That would make it much easier to head across. I think I will apply.
Bit different from the UK.
You'd get travel expenses paid after you graduated, and looking for your first job, but after that no chance.

Creep,
Interesting to throw open to the others.
In K we certainly bring in interviewees at outr cost and our arrangement- and sort out the visas- more of a problem in K. These usually come from Indian subcontinent, Egypt etc, UK and USA.
For jobs of moderate seniority - say second line we bring in the family too - but that is unlikely for Qatar / UAE.
Anyone else do the same.
Your name, presumably, derives from creeping around with an endoscope or is it telescope - habits I find admirable - but could not advise if the police are around.
