Hi guys - another query. when our two children hit 18, do they have to leave uae immed? I understand my daughter can stay with us, but my son? am thinking ahead as he is only ten, but as he has some disabilities do you think he would be able to continue living with us?

You daughter can remain under your sponsorship indefinitely (or at least until she is married off!) whereas your son's situation changes at 18. He has to be sponsored by an employer or get a student visa if he goes to university here.

I have no idea if a special dispensation can be arranged if he has additional needs, but perhaps your sponsor could put him on their books when the time comes.

Of course, this may all have changed in eight years time....

Do you honestly plan to stay here another eight years? Better to plan in no more than three year cycles in my opinion. Too much can change.

we dont know, but better to address the issues first we feel, trying to avaoid nasty shocks difficult I know.

Agreed - the region is totally unpredictable so it's very difficult to plan even one year in advance. I am now seriously thinking about relocating back to UK for my daughter's secondary schooling as I have heard too many horror stories about kids having to move around during GCSE years.

my daughter will be comin out just for her a levels then coming back to uk after a gap year in Oz, well, that's the theory. My son will probably go to Brighton College AD in Sept.

Our son hits 18 very soon. My husband has asked his HR department about the situation and they say no action is required until his current visa has run out (quite a while from now) As our son has a mild special need, then we have to get him assessed at a hospital (preferably government) and once done, my husband should still be able to sponsor him.
