Most of the US services provide UK IP's, so it's a case of tick the box to want to be in the UK or in the US as far as spoofing your address is concerned, but the thing with the DNS service, it would automatically switch on the router end to which ever country you wanted, so if you wanted to watch Canadian tele or Australian tele and went to a catch up channel type thing it would automatically make you appear as if you were in that country.

I understand that people don't want to divulge VPN providers on the open forum. I wasn't aware of DNS as an alternative to VPS so thanks for that Millhouse - I've learnt something there.
Googling however has not proved great - most info is from providers so difficult to get a good idea of the reality. Also tend to be US-centric for DNS - one well known provider has DNS servers in US but states iplayer etc still works. Digging deeper suggests that is not the case and dependent on hardware. When you throw static / dynamic IPs into the equation as csdf mentions along with different router configuration abilities and it all becomes a bit muddy even though I consider myself fairly techno-savvy, I might not be knowledgable but I can usually figure things out eventually!
I'll try to find a decent UK based smart DNS provider so there's no issue with UK content and I can keep speeds up. Don't think I really need the extra security of VPN tunnels but I might go down that route at some point. Thanks all for the contributions so far.

I have no idea where the DNS server actually is. Frankly, I don't care either as it works.
All these providers offer a free one month trial so I don't see your cornern...
EDIT - my DNS settings are on my laptop/ipad and not the router.

Thanks guys for all the useful information. I think I can move forward a little more knowledgable.
Interesting that you can change spoofed DNS location on a site by site basis - albeit on a laptop/ipad. I'm still a bit leery about US providers having UK addresses - surely a brit could provide this and maybe it would improve the distance between various servers which can hit speeds? Anyhoo - as I said - thanks guys for the info - and hopefully this thread will provide some guidance to others trying to set up a brit-centric home entertainment system!

I don't see this being resolved but this is a topic frequently discussed at expat get togethers. I ran into this challenge a few months ago so let me share my experience.
I found a smart DNS service which was great for 3 months till the ISP started to block it.
So, I then had a friend help me set up a VPN router which does slow things down, but I only route VPN traffic through it.
I was able to flash the Buffalo WZR-HP-AG300H costing around SR 700 at Jarir. Cheaper models might be flashable but this one had good features.
I will send you details separately in a PM.

What do you need for VoIP devices like Vonage. You cannot configure their DNS and you cannot install VPN software, so do you not need pre-configured VPN routers?

You need to plug your Vonage device into a vpn router configured for a US ip address

Depending on your location, Vonage works without VPN. It does not work in UAE without VPN.
In Saudi, some Smart DNS services are being blocked now.

Smart DNS yes its getting block, i was using one service it work for 8 months now i am switch to another one which give you vpn as well so coverd from both side.
