Oh my. You will be asking next if anyone has become friends with one of those ghastly taxi drivers.

It will be the end of the empire when we start to become friendly with these savages.

good on you for 'taking your lads out'...

I think that it's normal in every society to socialise or become friends with people from your own social background or circle...simply because you have more things in common with those people, because you are more likely to meet those people and because it's easier to do things together. You go to the same kind of places, you have the same sort of money to spend on activities or when going out for a meal for instance.

I think the OP is probably trying to point out that it's very hard to make friends with the "working class" here.

At home my two best mates are a plasterer and a postie, it is very unlikely that I would be able to socalise with people doing those jobs here - For all the reasons MataHari has pointed out, yet in England this is quite normal.

Tragic attempt at dry humour.,

I never heard anyone say that "I was out with John last night and he does laundry at the Hilton hotel". The people who people seem to meet always appear to be top brass.

I understood ya fella.

although I wouldn't say that people here are 'top brass'. I'd say that they THINK they are top brass...

probably cause the laundry man doesn't hang out at the same places as you do...simple as that. You don't meet cause your social paths don't cross and unless you make a real effort, you never will. And people tend to hang out with other people similar to themselves either in background, religion, financial status etc. It's the same all over the world.

Its funny how no one here ever considers themselves to be the idiots claiming to be the CEO/Director/Top Brass.
Are you all just the nice average Brits, as opposed to the loud, boozy brunch, look at my huge villa and two 4x4's Brits?

I socialized with 2 accountants, a manager and a financial controller at the weekend, no CEO's or shop assistants in sight.

Lots of Directors in a certain company you know and they don't all wear shirts and ties. I love the job titles like Sustainabilty Manager etc that people add on to their jobs when they don't really do any of it!

I don't have a lot of time for the Brit expats who have noses higher than their foreheads...especially since many of them are hardly aristocracy back home to begin with anyway.

I'll go out with almost anyone, especially if they drink and can hold a conversation about anything remotely interesting. I even had a drink with a Frenchman once...;)

its like when your 17 and in the boozer just getting aquainted with the finer things in life.
like every 17yr old the non-return valve doesnt seem to work very efficiently so you really have to know when to shut the supply off.
watching there faces in the morning is another great sight as well a kind of cross between bubonic plague and dementia !!
