Default United Arab Emirates detained a second pro-democracy advocate

Is someone getting a little jittery?

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Authorities in the United Arab Emirates detained a second pro-democracy advocate just two days after they took a leading reformist blogger into custody, a prominent lawyer and political activist said Sunday.

Fahad Salem al-Shehhy was detained late Saturday in Ajman, an emirate north of Dubai, after participating in an online forum calling for democratic reforms in the UAE, said Mohammed al-Mansouri, an activist.

i'm not expensive
money buy's silence
a return ticket home once or twice a year
status quo as long as i'm alright
let's sit at the banquet table and dine on the poor & pick the flesh from our veneer capped teeth with their bones
civil rights for all
not as long as i'm alright

I'm starting to wonder that too! Nothing like a bit of not-so-fanciful paranoia to keep you thinking!

And with the law being so vague about many things, it isn't exactly hard for the police to arrest and charge people with an offence.

exactly, I thought they would have found something more damaging though than alcohol without a licence?

sure, but he's Muslim, right? So the charge of possessing alcohol could also be an attempt to discredit him and damage his reputation. Plus, it doesn't need any witnesses. Any "conspiracy to" charges would need witnesses and a funny little detail called proof. As it is, he almost certainly didn't have a license, being Muslim, so part of it's true...

I don't think it requires a custodial sentance regardless of the nationality etc
