Word of caution. Many companies (including the guys I work for) will ask for details of all convictions. If you do not include the DUI on the application, and they later find out about it (company car rental, insurance claim etc), you will be out on your ear, probably with a pile of costs to repay to your employer for their outlay in your relocation.

When declaring this conviction would it be considered serious enough to be refused employment, visa etc? I realise driving would be out of the question but that wouldnt be a problem with plenty of alternative ways to commute.

I would refuse to employ you. Anyone irresponsible enough to drink and drive and thus risk killing other people and children too is completely unworthy in my view. Meaning, you are not worth it.

Many companies will not employ you with a criminal conviction and a DUI IS a criminal, as well as moral, biggie!!!!

On the matter of credit checks- whilst it is true to state that there are no credit checks here in Dubai- something which is bound to change in time, Barclays undertook a credit check against me in the UK when we applied for a mortgage with them.
On driving licences when I changed mine they weren't the least bit interested in seeing the paper counterpart which from memory tends to contain all of the information surrounding points/bans etc.
Just make sure not to get a drink drive conviction in the UAE!
Regards
Chris

For sure there are many people, even on this forum, who have driven while under the influence of drink. I did, when I was younger and more foolish.
People shouldn't be too quick to judge. A stupid mistake is not a mark of character
Scratcher
(PS I do not condone drink driving in any way)

I'm sure that you are not alone in your view but it is up to me to decide how quickly I judge in the scenario in question which is drinking and driving and getting a job.
Sorry but a standard is a standard they have taken a risk that could affect other people when they were not allowed to that makes them unemployable - not the drinking!
I would not employ someone who puts even a little melamine in milk products either because of the same reason - risking other innocent lives.

Bijilo123, the lad wasn't asking you for a job, he was asking a question regarding disclosing the fact when applying for a job or a resident visa.
