UAE entry visa and residence visa checks
A British Citizen/friend has been offered a job in Abu Dhabi and has just sent all their paperwork off to their new employer for them to apply for their entry/residence/work visa. They have a spent conviction from 10 years ago for possession of a small amount of cannabis where they received a fine only from the court. They do not have any further convictions of any kind but are worried about what checks will be made and whether this would stop them gaining entry/residence/work in the UAE? Please help.

Certain US firms here run very stringent checks when recruiting and something like that could well show up if the employer falls into that category.

Thank you for the quick reply. I understand they will be working for a hotel chain. I think they are more worried about the UAE government and what checks they will carry out when they receive the application from their employer??

I know for a fact that a someone from the UK who failed the background checks for an Australian residence visa (due to various financial irregularities in his past, including at least one criminal conviction for fraud) was accepted here with open arms.
Basically they let anyone in.
