Question Shipping to Muscat

Hi all - brand new to this forum but have read loads of your old posts and gleaned so much desperately needed information from them.

My husband has just accepted a job in Muscat and we arrive in mid-August with our 3 children (ages 11, 8, 4)

I am in a blind panic now trying to organise a plan of action so would appreciate your advice. Can anyone tell me how long shipping of furniture etc takes to arrive? Approx. how much to lease a 4WD per month? How much is the monthlu utility bills? Also the children love to swim-can anyone tell me how much it costs to be a member at one of the hotel clubs and is it worth the money?
Thanks so much!

hi Candy and welcome, the majority of the posters on here are based in Dubai. There is another guy who is moving over to Oman this summer as well, do a search on Muscat/Oman which should bring his threads up. Maybe you could send him a PM, I am sure his wife is going through the same headaches, as I know they have children as well.

I heard from some friends moving there that you have a particularly thorough medical inspection for Oman...not sure if they were just unlucky, is this normal?

Thanks I will do that.

As regards the medical, this is apparently no longer required - which makes the process a little easier

Candy Floss, hello there, I am the lucky person who is moving to Oman this summer who I believe Blue Cat is referring to.

Unfortunately though, I cant really help, as this is something that my new employer is pay for as part of my package.

Info I have found after research is that shipping normally takes about 6 weeks. Car rental again unsure, but sometimes might be cheaper just to buy a 2nd hand car.

Utilities varies on the accommodation, but I am of the understanding that it is cheaper that the UAE so research some of the threads as this is sort of given by UAE expats on one of my original threads. Also if blue cat does not mind, she gave me a contact of somebody she knows out there already, send her a pm asking for this.

Hotel clubs not sure about, but as it is so much cheaper than UK I would of thought so.

Out of curiosity where are you moving to in Oman, we are off to Muscat and hope to be there by end of June, and I have two children 12 & 10

Whatever you do, stay in Muscat, never EVER come to Doobuy, it's full of shallow eejits who couldn't make it in the UK.

And the traffic's shit too.

Muscat? Enjoy. I'm (officially) jealous!!

Hi - thanks for info - we arrive mid-August - we feel excited yet apprehensive having never been expats before. How about you? I see you go in May - it would be great to stay in touch to see how you and your children settle in.
We visited Muscat in April to take a look around- the scenery is beautiful- have you had the chance to visit?

I see you asked about the football in a previous post - when we were there we stopped at a "Showtime" desk at a mall (like the Sky ones at Lakeside). Anyway they were advertising that the Premier League 07/08 season was coming to their sports channel from August which was good news for my husband and eldest son.

We have found the Oman Explorer book a fabulous resource - do you have it?

Hi Candyfloss

Just read your thread, we are moving to Muscat also, mid to late June, never been there myself, but hubby worked there for 4 years some time ago and loved it. We have three children, 14, 11 and 3.
As with a previous reply this is a company move and shipping will I believe take approx 6 weeks. as for everything else I have no idea what to expect.
Originally from the UK we presently live in Australia, but really looking forward to this move, If you want to keep in touch, it would be nice and perhaps we can help each other along the way.
Take care and Good Luck with everything.

Hi Awineor2 again, perhaps all three of us can all meet up when we get there and help each other. Good Luck with your move also and hope to catch up soon.
