Sewage discharged into Dubai Creek
This is from Meed:
Contaminated water is being used in Dubai's irrigation system networks and discharged into Dubai Creek because treatment facilities cannot cope, and people are beginning to complain of a "sewagey smell".
Dubai Municipality has said it is failing to meet quality standards in wastewater management as it struggles to cope with rapidly growing volumes of sewage.
The Al Aweer plant (the only plant in Dubai) is operating at 70% over its capacity.
Rapid population growth has caught the Dubai Municipality unprepared. The BOD (biological oxygen demand - which measures the rate at which micro-organisms decomposing waste take up oxygen) level (at 154 tonnes a day as against a capacity of 75.4t/d at Al Aweer) is so high that it is easy to believe it is raw effluent they are pumping back around the system.
That is the water they use in all the parks - exposing people to dangerous pathogens

Re: Sewage discharged into Dubai Creek
from regular rugby training in Safa, I can confirm that this does seem to be the case. Flowers and road edges are one thing, but parks and domestic areas need to be irrigated with better water (or forget the posh flowers and glorious roundabouts, just use proper standard water in parks and save on desal energy for window dressing - seperate argument). Perhaps we have someone in our midst who can run some tests - I am thinking of an outraged 'there is shit in the burgers' style 7 days cover spread.

Hi All,
you could take samples and submitt to Bodycote who do water testing to confirm the presence of contamination such as this.
This is the company I will be joining mid to late Feb as Regional Chemistry Manager Middle east, the labs perform a wide range of tests on soils, waters, well almost anything you care to sample and submitt.
They can test for organic chemicals, inorganics and a whole range of biological tests including faecel coliforms to confirm the presence of untreated sewage.
Just a thought.

I know this as they are my competitor in a different type of testing and we spy on each other. They are a good company - but wankers.

The testing is done. It got started coz the golf course was using grey water and needed it assured. Intertek in Sharjagh and Jebel Ali to the environmental testing - they have microbiol labs. Its not the result of the test you see - its what you do after youget it.
