Robot Camel Riders?
"DOHA (Reuters) - Qatar plans to start using robots as riders in popular camel races after international criticism of the use of child jockeys, the Gulf Arab state's official QNA news agency reported on Wednesday.
It said the robot, developed by an unnamed Swiss company, had been tested successfully and that the energy-rich country was considering setting up a factory to build them. ..."

Robots to ride camels at races next season
WAM
Abu Dhabi: Child jockeys are banned and light-weight jockeys are hard to come by. No problem. Now, robot jockeys will solve all the troubles on the race tracks.
The UAE yesterday successfully tested the first prototype mechanical camel jockey.
The mechanical jockey is light in weight and receives orders from the instructor via a remote control system fixed on the back of the camel.
The system allows the instructor to guide the camel using the mechanical jockey, the same way as a human jockey guides the camel.
The experiment was carried out under the directives of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness Shaikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
Shaikh Sultan Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Protocol and Guesthouse Department, said the mechanical jockeys would be used in the next racing season. He said the first batch of robot jockeys will arrive in August.
Shaikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of State for Foreign affairs and chairman of the UAE Camel Racing Association, last March issued a decision prohibiting jockeys under 16 years to take part in racing.

Testing of robot camel jockeys ends in August
By Samir Salama, Bureau Chief
Abu Dhabi: The UAE plans to manufacture its new robot jockeys in Abu Dhabi, an official said yesterday.
* Robots to ride camels at races next season
The move will gradually phase out human jockeys over five years, Shaikh Sultan Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, chairman of the Protocol Department, told Gulf News.
The move means more than 20,000 young jockeys, mostly from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India, Yemen and Sudan, will lose their jobs.
Shaikh Sultan, who is also vice-president of the UAE Camel Racing Federation, said the robots, which were developed by UAE national engineers, will be priced at Dh7,300 a piece.
The UAE successfully tested the first prototype robot camel jockey on Saturday.
"We have completed the first phase in the production of the robot. Engineers will start the second phase in three weeks. The testing phase is planned to end by August," he said.
A production line will then be set up in the capital, Shaikh Sultan said. He did not say which country will build the plant or how much investment has been allocated to the project. "The UAE is determined to invest dearly to put an end to the problem of using underage camel jockeys," he said. He did not rule out that the UAE might subsidise the robots to make them affordable.
The lightweight robot jockeys, scheduled to be introduced next year, receive orders from the instructor via a remote-control system fixed on the back of the camel.
Shaikh Sultan said the manufacturing of robots would not mean an immediate ban on human jockeys. There would be special races using robots and other races with human jockeys. Eventually, only robots will ride camels at races.
