Random thread - I need some IT help!
#1
Not being the most IT literate of people I wonder if one of you can help me. Have just bought a new laptop which I have already double loaded with XP as I got confused.....
My question is, if I have a USB stick should my computer be able to read it straight away or do I need to download software first? Can't understand why it won't read the files I have put on it and the stupid thing doesn't even take floppy discs.
Any help will be much appreciated!
(can't ask anyone at work as I work for Age Concern and the majortiy of people I work with don't even use a computer!)

If you have reloaded XP (twice) then you may also want to make sure it has loaded all the software it needs to access the USB ports (called "drivers").
The easy way to do this is to plug in something else that uses USB and see if it works ... like a printer.
If other USB stuff works then at least it provides a clue. If nothing works then you will need to reinstall the USB drivers (the software to communicate with the port).
This is tricky but not impossible, especially if you have the original laptop installation discs.
So, in short, try something else in the USB port
Hope that helps a bit
