Pubs across the UK extend drinking hours...

Pubs across the UK (except Scotland) extend drinking hours...
In a move that has left critics pulling their hair out, thousands of pubs across the UK will begin operating for longer hours at 1 minute past midnight, tonight. In London alone 5000 pubs will stay open for longer which has promted fears of binge drinking, more violent crimes and more late night vandalism.
So how do you think this will affect the UK? Are the streets going to be safe after dark? Or do you think that this is a good move by the government?
Charles Clarke's beer belly obvioiusly shows that he is in complete favour of the move.... he must obviously be looking forward to staying out later. LOL

Critics have said that this will still happen - hopefully the new hours will stagger the trouble, make it easier to avoid
Personally I look forward to the change - especially on weekends, we used to have to go to a nightclub to stay out later (or one of the very few bars with late license) - would much prefer staying out later in a bar of my choice.

Scotland has had late night drinking for years, so less of the whole of the UK thing.
pubs there can be open to two or three in the morning and open at 6am :scared:

Was a lot better to have the freedom of choosing to go out later at 10pm and have a few come home at 1am or 2am rather than going straight from work etc....
It'll all work well - should have been done years ago. The open hours were put in place during WW 1 were they not?

Scotchland is a fine place. Glasgow is the most European city in the UK bar none. Better and more relaxed than you would ever imagine if the furthest North you've been is Watford.
A question - have you ever been to Scotland?

Been there, climbed a number of mountains there, got married there, travelled the Outer Hebrides from Lewis down to Barra! We've probably seen more of Scotland than most Scots have (and that's no joke - Scots are notorious for not actually exploring their own country, preferring to sod off on holiday to sunny, warm places instead).
It's a great place, but sadly, there's a reason for this report...

Born and raised in Scotland. Lived and studied in Glasgow in the late 80's and early 90's - just when it was really beginning to evolve into the city it is now, which is a clean and safe environment in the city centre. I have never been the victim of violent crime (or indeed, being a Scot it may be unusual to say according to "reports" - never perpetrated a violent crime) in Scotland.
I've lived in a number of places and only felt unsafe in one country...and considering London has a larger population than Scotland, let's call London a country - I was FAR more at risk there than in Glasgow etc.
I have been mugged in London. At knife point. In "trendy" Notting Hill (well ok W10 - It was actually Ladbroke Grove (I assume W10 is a postcode reference))
If - for one second - you agree with the "report"'s findings that Scotland is a more violent place than ANY OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD you are a lot more blinkered than I thought!
And any UN "report" that bases it's entire findings on a TELEPHONE SURVEY does not really inspire even a modicum of confidence...
Auto.
P.S. Thanks for throwing in another stereotype of the Scots not exploring their own country "preferring to sod off on holiday to sunny, warm places instead". Cheers. And yes I realise I am in Dubai.
